”Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you two
Don’t forget me, I beg
I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.”
Every time we hear songs by Adele, we can’t help but admire her raw, soul-piercing voice, letting it resonate in our minds.
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins or Adele was born on this very day in 1988 in Tottenham, North London. As a young girl brought up by a single mom, Adele started singing at the age of 4. She loved singing more than reading. Did you know that she read her last book at the age of 6. She went to BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, where Jessie J. was her classmate and her school had alumni of the likes of Amy Winehouse. A lover of Spice Girls, she impersonated them at dinner parties. She was deeply influenced by Etta James. Every night for an hour, she would listen to her music before retiring to bed. After a friend posted three of her songs on Myspace, she was discovered by XL Recordings. They went on to sign her and she released her first album 19 in 2008, which was a massive success. From there on, there was no looking back. By now everyone know her love for black outfits (fan of Johnny Cash, you see). She broke new records every time her albums released. She also featured on the 2016 March cover of Vogue, looking incredibly gorgeous.
If you watch her interviews, you will see how free-spirited and chatty she is. Although witty and charming with a working-class London accent, Adele has proved many times that she is just one of us, her life can be as messed up as ours. Let’s look at some of the instances:
When In Love:
Adele cancelled her 2008 US tour dates to be with a former boyfriend. Although cancelling your tour dates is a huge deal, but don’t we all do crazy things when in love? And Adele was no different.
Adele gets jittery every time she hits the stage and prefers to play in smaller venues, where her performances are more intimate and memorable. She also once said, "I’d rather do 12 years at the Barfly than one night at the O2."
Too lazy to hit the Gym:
This British singer does not care about weight issues. She says, "My life is full of drama and I won’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like. I don’t like going to the gym. I’ve never had a problem with the way I look. I’d rather have lunch with my friends than go to a gym." We have the same thoughts, girl.
In spite of all this, what she has achieved at the mere age of 28 is huge:
Her debut album, 19, certified seven times platinum in the UK, and double platinum in the US.
In 2011 and 2012, Billboard named Adele Artist of the Year.
In 2012, she was ranked at number five on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music.
Time magazine named her one of the most influential people in the world in 2012 and 2016.
She was awarded MBE for her services to music by the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace in 2013.
She also got waxed at Madame Tussauds in London in 2013, wearing the outfit she wore at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards.
Her album 21 received half a dozen Grammys, Brit Awards, including British Album of the Year, and three American Music Awards. The album sold 31 million copies worldwide, giving her mentions in the Guinness Book of World Records.
On 28 October, news outlets, including BBC News, reported that Hello was being viewed on YouTube an average one million times an hour.
We congratulate Adele on all her achievements and wish her all the best as she says Hello to a new year in her life. We hope she Sets Fire to the music industry again by giving us some more soul-crushing music to cry ourselves to sleep.
Happy birthday, Adele!
