One of 12 children, Dilip Saab started his career as a dry fruit supplier. Little did he know that his future stood among the stars. He was spotted by the reigning actress of the ’40s, Devika Rani, who offered him an actor’s job and he turned out to be one of the finest discoveries in the Indian cinema. His impeccable style and authentic portrayals are just two of the reasons why noted filmmaker Satyajit Ray pronounced him as ‘the ultimate method actor’ of all time.
Dilip Saab reigned the ’50s with a string of blockbusters including Jugnu, Shaheed, Jogan, Deedar, Daag, Devdas and Madhumati. His portrayal of a drunkard in Devdas, a villager in Naya Daur, a prince in Mughal-e-Azam to a double role in Ram aur Shyam are touted as iconic roles that continue to appeal the masses even today. Moreover, well-known songs rendered by greats like Mohd Rafi, Mukesh and Kishore Da were all picturized on him. Udde Jab Jab Zulfein Teri, Suhana Safar, Maang Ke Saath Tumhara, Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna are some of his biggest hits of all time.
With a career spanning over six decades, the well-known thespian holds a Guinness World Record of 8 Filmfare Best Actor Awards to his name. He can speak in six different languages and is also known to have worked with all the reigning actresses of his time!
