Happy birthday to everyone's favorite Canadian comedian of Indian descent – Russell Dominic Peters! One of the world's most famous comedians, he is an absolute sellout, in a good way, of course. He has sold out most of his shows and is also the first comic to have been sold out at the O2 Arena and Air Canada Centre. He has done that multiple times, breaking records wherever he goes, and counts them as personal victories. Forbes listed him as one of the highest paying comedians on a couple of occasions, most recently in 2013 when he earned 21 million USD! He has also appeared in a few films like Breakaway, Source Code, The Jungle Book, etc. which only adds to his fortunes.
Two decades ago, he met comedian George Carlin, who is one of his biggest influences. He advised him to "get on stage whenever and wherever possible". Peters took that advice to heart and believes that is the reason he is where he is now. We've all seen his shows, heard his jokes and even used them as quotes. As he turns 46 today, check out a few fun facts you may not have known about the comedian. Read them or somebody's gonna get a hurt real bad.
Russell is a family man. He pays tribute to his late father Eric (who was a federal meat inspector back in Mumbai) by including famous stories about him in his shows. His mother Maureen has also appeared in a few videos he has released. He is managed by his brother Clayton who also co-wrote Russell’s autobiography titled Call Me Russell.
In school, he was bullied and often was called a 'Paki' which he referred to as his 'N' word. In order to defend himself from bullies in school, Russell learnt boxing. No wonder the comedian has some great punchlines. Due to his ADHD, he was sent to a special school, which he has also joked about in his shows.
He is, however, inspired by Hollywood films – rom-coms in particular. He proposed to his now ex-wife Monica Diaz at Los Angeles airport, before marrying her in Las Vegas. Straight out of a rom-com, indeed.
Of course, how can we not go through Russell Peters' best moments? Check out this compilation.
