Who do you think is the most underrated character in the Harry Potter series? Luna Lovegood, who braved to be herself, or Neville Longbottom, who was the real hero all along? Was it the smart and badass Hermione Granger, or the caring and loyal Hagrid? Sure, all of these characters played a very important role throughout the series and were probably not as appreciated as Harry Potter himself. But the biggest underrated character of all time is Ron Weasley – Harry’s best friend. He was Harry’s first friend, and the family he never had. He was by Harry’s side through thick and thin. As Rupert Grint – the actor who played Ron Weasley – celebrates his 28th birthday today, we bring you 10 reasons why Ron is the best friend anyone could ever have.
He has a great sense of humor
Harry may be the chosen one, but Ron is the funny one. The movies missed out a number of Ron Weasley wisecracks, but if you are a true Potterhead, you probably know them all. Our favorite one is when he described Percy as – ‘Percy wouldn’t recognize a joke if it danced naked in front of him wearing Dobby’s tea cozy’.
He’s there for his friends, no matter what
Ron was always by Harry’s side, whether it was in detention, or facing the biggest dark wizard in the world. He helped him get past McGonagall’s chess set, accompanied him to the Chamber of Secrets, practically led Harry to Sirius’ hideout, helped him practice during his Triwizard tasks, followed him to the Ministry of Magic, and helped him destroy the Horcruxes.
He is the life of the party
Harry and Hermione were pretty boring by themselves, something even Harry admitted to in the Goblet of Fire. Ron added the fun quotient to their dynamic trio. He had all the jokes, lightened the mood, and even had the best rule-breaking ideas. Do not forget that he fully supported Harry for sneaking into Hogsmeade, even when he was not permitted to go there.
He stands up for his friends, even if his actions backfire
Ron was a true Gryffindor. He was brave, stood up for his friends, and would fight to death for them. As an 11-year-old, he was ready to make a sacrifice, so Harry could protect the Philosopher’s Stone. At 12, he cursed Malfoy for calling Hermione a Mudblood, which backfired on him. At 13, he challenged Sirius Black to kill him before he killed Harry. Over the years, he simply got braver.
He will take one for the team
Harry, Hermione, and Ron had a bumpy way till the end, and Ron was ready to take the most hits. He backed Harry when Snape was cruel to him, helped Hagrid prepare his case for Buckbeak (something you wouldn’t know if you didn’t read the books), jumped into an ice-cold lake to save Harry, and destroyed one of the Horcruxes.
He loves food and will share it too
The wizarding world has the best kind of food, and Ron loves it all! Even though he came from a large and poor family, and didn’t own much himself, he was always ready to share what he had with Harry. He offered him the treats he got from home and even got his mother to make him a jumper for Christmas – something only the Weasley children got.
He is fiercely loyal
Ron is the perfect combination of all the four Hogwarts houses – brave like a Gryffindor, witty as a Ravenclaw, of the purest blood as a Slytherin, and loyal like a Hufflepuff. Not only will he stand by his friends, he will follow them into the dark and fight fearlessly for them. If you want to kill Harry, you’d have to kill him too!
And pretty smart too
While Hermione got all the credit for being the smartest in the trio, do not forget Ron’s mastery in wizarding chess. He was not only an amazing chess player, he helped Harry and Hermione get past McGonagall’s daunting chess challenge while he was only 11 years old. Don’t forget he took a hit there too.
He is the boss
Harry might have been the star of the series, but even he couldn’t live without his best friend – Ron. Proof: the second task of the Triwizard Tournament. Ron had several of his own ‘boss’ moments, like the time he stole his father’s car to rescue Harry, or stood up for him against Snape. SNAPE, for crying out loud! Don’t forget he ended up with Hermione – the baddest witch of all!
And possibly your soulmate
Did you ever think Ron and Hermione would end up together? We did! The signs were everywhere. The constant arguments, the jealousy, the caring, and the love – it began many years before they even started dating. Ron was the person Harry would miss the most, and turns out, so would Hermione. Ron Weasley + Hermione Granger forever <3
We love you, Rupert/Ron. Have a super birthday!
