Happy Birthday Vijay – The Hero of The Masses

If there’s an actor who dances effortlessly, performs action sequences with ease and pulls the ‘mass’ hero avatar easily, then it is Kollywood’s charming actor, Vijay. Fondly known as Ilayathalapathy (young general), Vijay began career as a solo hero in Naalaya Theerpu (1992). From then on Vijay has acted in over 59 films. Some of them are hits, some blockbusters and some gained critical success. Some of the popular films in his career are Ghilli, Pokkiri and Thuppakki. These films proved that he is an actor who chooses roles that are high on content, without compromising on the commercial elements of the film. On the occasion of his birthday, we bring you some lesser known facts about the actor.

1. Vijay began his career as a child artist in the film Vetri, which was directed by his father S. A. Chandrasekhar. He then went on to star in close to 10 films, which were all directed by his father, including his solo hero debut, Naalaya Theerpu.
2.  Vijay‘s younger sister Vidhya Chandrasekhar passed away when she was only 2 years old. As a tribute, his family started a production house and named it V. V. Creations (Vs representing the names – Vijay and Vidhya). This production house also produced Vijay’s first film.
3. On his birthday every year, Vijay is known for gifting gold chains/rings to newborns at government hospitals.
4. Vijay is also responsible for starting the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (launched in Pudukottai on 26 July 2009). The organization carries out philanthropic activities. They educated a number of school-going children through his foundation.
5.  In 2008, Vijay was signed up as an ambassador for the Indian Premier League cricket team Chennai Super Kings. He also starred in a Coca-Cola advertisement, which also co-starred Katrina Kaif.
Keep rocking, Ilayathalapathy!
