Today, May 6 is International No Diet Day (INDD) – an annual celebration of body acceptance, including fat acceptance and body shape diversity. With the symbol of a light blue ribbon, this day is also dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle with a focus on health at any size and in raising awareness of the potential dangers of dieting and the unlikelihood of success.
By 'celebrating' this day, participants aim to question the idea of one "right" body shape; raise awareness of weight discrimination, size bias and fat phobia; declare a day free from diets and obsessions about body weight; present the facts about the diet industry, emphasizing the inefficacy of commercial diets; honor the victims of eating disorders and weight-loss surgery; help end weight discrimination, sizism and fat phobia.
Let me explain why this day is important. Diets (well, most) are bad for you. The root of the word diet is derived from the Greek word 'diaita', which means “manner of living.” But the connotation of the word is usually “quick fix” and “temporary” and often “hunger”. None of these sound very good. When people say they're “dieting”, they basically mean they're staying hungry. As a popular nutritionist once said, “Stay hungry, stay foolish.” Eating less is the wrong kind of diet, but eating right is the right kind of diet. Anything done temporarily will only have a temporary result.
The Institute of Medicine has stated that: "Those who complete weight loss programs lose approximately 10 percent of their body weight only to regain two-thirds within a year and almost all of it within five years." So, what's the right way to be fit and in shape? Work out and eat right. It's really that simple. Seek a nutritionist's help and chart out a plan for your body type and what suits you best. Lift weights and do your cardio, do it regularly, and not just for a month or two. Fitness is not a course, it's a way of life. And no matter what, learn to love your body!
