It has been nine years since the last Harry Potter book, but Pottermania lives on. Yes, Potterheads still cannot get enough of the magical world and everyone it involves. As one of them, I admit I jump up with excitement every time J. K. Rowling reveals us more about our favorite characters, either on Twitter, or through Pottermore, the legit website for the Harry Potter fandom. On the author’s 51st birthday and our favorite character’s 36th birthday (for those who don’t know, it’s Harry Potter’s birthday too), we bring you the most shocking revelations about the magical world, which were made after the books. Take a look.
It was all in the family.
Harry and Voldemort are related! They are descendants of the Peverell brothers – yes, the ones from The Deathly Hallows story. Remember how Marvolo Gaunt possessed the second Hallow in his ring? Turns out it was an ancestral heritage, and Gaunt did not know of its real properties. It was also revealed that Harry’s Invisibility Cloak (the third Hallow) was passed down generations.
Free education. No kidding.
Hogwarts is free of charge! So you basically get into a magical school, to learn more magic, eat magical food, and live a magical life – all free of cost! Rowling revealed that the Ministry of Magic covers the cost of every young witch’s and wizard’s education.
Coming out of the wardrobe…
Fans were shocked when J. K. Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was gay. He was the first character of the magical world to have come out of the closet, and many fans were excited by the revelation. We would totally love a YA fan fiction involving him and Grindelwald.
You have been pronouncing ‘Voldemort’ wrong.
The name of the greatest dark wizard of all time has been mispronounced for years. J. K. Rowling revealed that the ‘T’ in Voldemort is silent, since ‘mort’ is a French word. So you’d pronounce it as ‘Vol-de-mor’.
Hermione broke the law. Big time!
Sure, Hermione broke the law several times in school along with Harry and Ron. But she also possessed an illegal object in the seventh book. Can you guess what it was? Her supercool beaded bag! Rowling revealed the Extension Charm that she used on the handbag was illegal, but Hermione was not punished for it.
Hagrid’s Patronus Predicament
Hagrid cannot produce a Patronus. Casting the Patronus charm requires advanced magical skills, and you would remember how Hagrid was expelled in his second year of school. So no happy charm for poor Hagrid.
Would you rather save Arthur Weasley or Remus Lupin?
What would you do if you had to choose between your two favorite characters? Rowling revealed that Arthur Weasley was not supposed to survive the attack in The Order of Phoenix, but later changed her mind and decided to keep him alive. Instead, she killed off Remus Lupin in The Deathly Hallows. RIP Marauders.
Hogwarts is not the only magical school.
To the excitement of Potterheads worldwide, Rowling revealed that there are 11 magical schools across the world. Ilvermorny, the school in the US, was founded by a young girl, whose parents were Hogwarts alumni. She, along with her no-maj (American for muggle) husband, started the school for kids who wanted to learn magic. Interestingly, Ilvermorny has four houses too. Head to Pottermore to see where you would be sorted.
The Future of the Gang
Hermione returns to Hogwarts for her second year, while Harry and Ron drop out of school. Yet, they get well-paid Ministry jobs (as Aurors, duh!), and Neville goes on to teach Herbology in Hogwarts. Ginny, meanwhile, becomes a professional Quidditch player for the Holyhead Harpies, and after having her three children, works as a senior Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet.
The New Generation
Remember Harry and Ginny’s eldest son James at the end of The Deathly Hallows? Rowling revealed that he was sorted into Gryffindor. The new play/book Harry Potter and the Cursed Child delves into the lives of the next generation, especially Albus Severus Potter.
