The much-awaited film of the Dhoom franchise, Dhoom: 3 released yesterday and everybody is rushing to the theatres to watch this expected winter blockbuster. In Dhoom: 3, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has played a negative character and this makes the latest installment of the popular Dhoom franchise a real fun to catch the glimpse of superstar on the big screen. Dhoom, which first came out in 2004 was a big hit and kind of brought back the popularity of superbikes in India again. John Abraham starred in the first installment of Dhoom as a thief aka conman who robs for money. Then came the next film in 2006 and Dhoom: 2 found its way to the screen which had Hrithik Roshan in the lead. This film too was a big success, and since then the Indian audience were waiting for Dhoom: 3 to come out in theatres. The wait took 7 years to finally end, and with December 2013 and Dhoom: 3 is now playing in the cinema screens. With its release yesterday, it is the best time to look back and recount some of the films where the heroes and stars of Indian film industry have essayed the role of a bad guy.
Amitabh Bachchan in Parwana:
Before Amitabh Bachchan became THE superstar, he played a negative role in this movie which actually became a sort of a prototype for such characters to be played by different actors in the future. In Parwana, Amitabh Bachchan played the role of an artist who is obsessively in love with a girl. To win her love, he executes a murder, frames the man she loves and ultimately kills himself when he realizes that the girl doesn’t love him. The negative portrayal by a Bollywood legend was also referenced in Johnny Gaddar (2007).
Sunil Dutt in Mother India:
Classic movie, classic ending and classic characters; Mother India was India’s first entry to the Oscars and eventually made it to the shortlist. In this film, Bollywood star Sunil Dutt played a negative role which was to be reminisced by film-lovers for ages to come. The characters of an embittered son who becomes a dacoit and finally gets killed by his own mother is the stuff legendary films are made of. The role played by Sunil Dutt also acted as a social commentary of those times.
Shahrukh Khan in Darr, Anjaam & Baazigar:
The current Bollywood superstar who started by playing negative characters in films, very convincingly portrayed a scheming villain. Almost all of the roles played by Shahrukh Khan in Darr, Anjaam and Baazigar were the sort of variant of what Amitabh Bachchan played in Parwana. Still Shahrukh did it with such a manic evil-touch that made him the star of the early nineties and eventually, his role as a romantic hero in DDLJ got him the status of a superstar. His romantic roles were next to come, but remember Darr, Anjaam and Baazigar got him the early popularity.
Saif Ali Khan in Omkara:
An adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello, Omkara showed Saif Ali khan in the negative role. His role of Langda Tyagi was based on the character of Laso from Othello and Saif’s peformance was much praised; both from the critics and the audience. He played the role of Langda Tyagi, an ambitious man hungry for political power which brings out the evil in him.
Manoj Bajpai in Gangs of Wasseypur I:
Long before Gangs of Wasseypur came, Manoj Bajpai epitomized the role of Bhikhu Mhatre, an underworld don who has a good heart. This time in Gangs of Wasseypur I, he played the role of Sardaar Khan, a man with the motive of revenge. One of the most-menacing villains of Indian cinema, Manoj Bajpai gave a great performance making the character of Sardaar Khan much popular among the audience. His performance was also much-praised cementing his status as one of the best actors currently working in Indian cinema.
