What After High School?

Grandiose debuts – The students of the year couldn’t have asked for anything better than this. It was a quintessential K-Jo movie – ostentatious, surreal and picture perfect. What was most commendable were the roles given to each of these young actors that merged in so well with their personalities. Alia was the glam girl, Varun played the rich, spoilt brat and Sidharth played the adorable new-comer who just happened to have fallen into this candy-floss world. No wonder it looked so natural and effortless! As they say, everything’s wonderful in the shelter of the four walls of school, the true challenges come once you step out into the real world. Let’s see how these students have fared in their Bolly(wood) Test:

Mahesh Bhatt must really be a proud father because his 20 year-old daughter has taken Bollywood by storm. After the high-school drama, Alia was definitely lauded for her high style quotient but no one would lay their bets on her just then as the actress she has become so soon. From being compared to Kareena’s ‘Poo’ in K3G in SOTY to Shabana Azmi’s landmark performance in ‘Arth’ in Highway – we have to say that this young girl has covered a long distance in a very short span of time. Highway was a very smart second film choice to establish herself as an actor. After being shot down by most guests in comparison to Parineeti Chopra in Koffee With Karan Season 4, I think Alia might just have given each one of the big stars a reason to doubt their judgement. She has burst out of her bubble and made it very clear that she’s here to stay. From the trailers of 2 States, we’d say the Bhatt girl has hit the jackpot! She’s undoubtedly given the two boys a run for their money. Clearly unlike herself in the movie, there’s no chance of her quitting the competition to let the boys hog the limelight here. This diva was born to be a star.

When most people were asked to choose their favorite student, majority chose this charming newcomer who seemed to speak a lot through those honest eyes. He won hearts by playing a man of a few words. His restraint was impressive. He touched your heart by being this lovable new boy, but at the same time, tried his best to perform like he wasn’t a newcomer and emerged triumphant. His simplicity made the girls swoon. He fit into the image of the ideal boyfriend (of course till the rumors about him being homosexual started) but this didn’t affect his fan following. Sidharth was the first of the three to make his second appearance with the supremely-talented Parineeti Chopra in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’. His performance was celebrated but his co-star did take away a good chunk of the attention. I guess it’s the price you have to pay if you want to work against an actor of Parineeti’s caliber. However, the actor did manage to prove that he’s more than just a handsome face and has even managed to shake a leg instead of breaking one this time. All in all, we’d say it was very good second film but there’s still a long way to go for this tall and handsome boy. This current heartthrob always has the right things to say to make his girl fans go weak in the knees everytime they even so much as have a glimpse of him. As far as we can say, this seems to work as his USP.

The student who won the trophy in the movie, only to find that it was given away to him by Sidharth. This actually does draw a strange connect. Varun did seem to try very hard to hog up the screen space, but in a way being the underdog seemed to benefit Sidharth instead, as he walked away with the girl on-screen and the million girls off-screen. Though we have to give due credit to Varun for his killer dance moves and well-built body. He is all set to hit the big screen with his father’s film – Main Tera Hero. This film seems to be an extension of the persona already created by Varun. It does not reflect much scope for a real performance and it looks like he has decided to dance his way out of this one as well. They say we should leave the best for the last, but we have our doubts on this one. Varun comes across as a rich, spoilt-brat who usually comes across as too full of himself in his interviews, and you yearn to see a glimpse of an actual performance from this ‘hero’. We can only hope that he manages to prove us wrong. He better pull up his socks if he wants to catch up with his classmates or he might not get promoted this year.
