DIPLO AKA Wesley Pentz is one of the world’s most wanted DJs, producers and musicians. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1978, Pentz spent most of his early childhood working at his father’s bait shop in Florida.
At an early age, Pentz was influenced by the sounds of Southern Hip-Hop artists. At 18, he moved to Philadelphia to study Film and Music at Temple University. As a student, Pentz took a job in the South Philadelphia community as a social worker and created the Hollertronix. It was the beginning of his fledgling career as DIPLO. In 2004, he released his debut album, Florida.
Florida caught the attention of XL Recordings’ M.I.A, who partnered with Pentz to release the mixtape, Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1. Later in 2005, Diplo founded Mad Decent, a record label that served as a launching pad for many upcoming music artistes. Mad Decent is also popular for its series of free concerts in major cities known as Block Parties. Pentz also founded a charity called Heaps Decent. It is a social relief program that helps children in Australia as well as other international countries. The multi-talented musician also produced Favela on Blast, a documentary exploring the booming subculture in Brazil. It focused on ‘funk carioca’, a musical rhythm that mixes American electronic funk of the 1980s with diverse Brazilian music.
In 2009, Diplo collaborated with Dave Taylor (also known as Switch) to start an electronic music project called Major Lazer. They released the first album Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do in 2009 and Free the Universe in 2013, which turned out to be major hits.
To add another feather to his cap, Diplo was nominated at the 2013 Grammy Awards for "Producer of the Year". He also collaborated with leading musicians like Tiesto, Skrillex, Radiohead, Beck, Kelly Rowland and Britney Spears, to name a few. The star DJ also penned 128 Beats Per Minute. It illustrates the cultures and multifaceted music scenes across the world.
Now, for the biggest news of the year! Major Lazer is coming to your city as a part of the Vh1 Supersonic Arcade. Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire will be performing at Mumbai on December 12, Delhi on December 13 and Bangalore on December 14. Don’t miss out on the epic live concert.
