Years ago, fans of Hollywood movies in India rarely got to see their favorite films in theatres. Now, many more English movies are released in the country and sometimes, they come out a week before their US release. This year has been particularly good for Hollywood movies that released in India as a lot of them were massive hits. Some of these films even managed to outperform the Hindi movies that released on the same day or around the same time. Here’re some of the Hollywood movies that gave Hindi films a tough time at the box office.
The Jungle Book – Fan
Fan was Shah Rukh Khan’s next movie after Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale. It hit theaters a week after Disney’s The Jungle Book but the latter continued to remain the first choice amongst moviegoers. The audience was excited to see Mowgli again (Jungle Book was an immensely popular series in the 90s on Indian television). Fan, on the other hand, was considered too cold and boring.
Captain America: Civil War – One Night Stand, Traffic, and 1920 London
The third installment of the Captain America series got off to a great start in India. The shows were nearly sold out and this Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlett Johansson-starrer set the cash registers ringing. The Bollywood releases in that week were One Night Stand, Traffic and 1920 London, and all of them proved to be major disappointments.
X:Men – Apocalypse – Sarbjit
In spite of the crazy promotions, the Cannes’ premier, and a decent star cast, Sarbjit didn’t do as well as it was expected to. X:Men – Apocalypse, which released on the same day, got a better opening and continued to dominate the box office in the following week. What a fantastic month it proved to be for Marvel!
The Conjuring 2 – Te3n
English horror movies have many takers in the country, and since The Conjuring was hit, there was a lot of hype around its sequel. The Conjuring 2 is still running in cinemas while the Hindi movie Te3n, is almost on its way out. Te3n had a stellar star cast which included Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Vidya Balan, but the weak script is what worked against it.
