Hollywood Hits and Misses: January

So it has been one month since New Year’s Eve. January has come and gone. Time does fly, doesn’t it? It’s time to recapitulate the Hollywood films that were released in January. Which one was a winner? Which one was a blunder? Read on and find out.

The Imitation Game
Our Rating: ★★★★
Even before the release of this film, critics and fans were all praises for Mr. Cumberbatch, who effortlessly slipped into Alan Turing’s skin. This biopic touched millions of hearts! The Imitation Game told the story of an unsung World War 2 hero. It recounts a chapter that is missing from our history textbooks – Breaking the Enigma Code. It’s safe to say that Benedict Cumberbatch simply cannot give a bad performance.

The Theory of Everything
Our Rating: ★★★
A heartbreaking yet inspiring film, The Theory of Everything explored Stephen Hawking’s battle with ALS and his relationship with his wife. Eddie Redmayne gave a phenomenal performance, while Felicity Jones was noteworthy. This beautiful depiction of life’s challenges and true love is worth the watch.

Our Rating: ★★★★
An impeccable cast, spectacular direction and brilliant camera work is probably what made Birdman a riveting film. It falls in the league of films that leave you perpetually spellbound and will keep your eyes glued to the screen. If not for any other reason, watch Birdman for Michael Keaton!

Big Eyes
Our Rating: ★★★
Another exceptional film by Tim Burton, Big Eyes is an honest depiction of the struggles faced by an artist. Starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, this film is based on a true story that shocked the entire world, not just the art realm. Indeed, fame comes at a price.

Our Rating: ★★★★
Here’s an adorable and delightful film you can enjoy with your family, over and over again! Paddington is that wholesome film that leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Don’t let the fact that it is based on a children’s book trick you into believing that it is targeted at children.

Our Rating: ★★
Unbroken not only feels stretched and incomplete, but it also fails to connect with the audience. The film is well-intentioned, but towards the end you are unable to establish a connection with the protagonist – an Olympic athlete with humble beginnings. Unbroken could definitely have done better.
American Sniper
Our Rating: ★★
This was unquestionably a profound film, but exaggerated on the patriotism and melodrama. American Sniper deals with the incessant conflict in Iraq. It lacks depth and has taken complete liberty in order to justify the actions of the American military as being righteous. We feel the film would have faired better as a documentary than a feature-length film.

Our Rating: ★★
Something is seriously up with Johnny Depp. His career needs restoration. This film tries too hard to be funny and fails to extract even a decent chuckle from us. Mortdecai is a bummer, despite a heavyweight star cast.

Seventh Son
Our Rating: ★★
This fantasy flick seems to have focused all its efforts in the visual effects, immersing the audience into a different world. Average performances from the cast along with a hasty and haphazard plot, Seventh Son seems to lack imagination.

Taken 3
Our Rating: ★★
The third installment of the series, this is an insipid action film that feels like an unnecessary drag. Ho-hum performances are delivered by the cast, except the protagonist. Liam Neeson is the only good thing to happen to this film.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death
Our Rating: ★1/2
If you would like to watch a horror film that’s nowhere close to scary, this should be the first on your list. It’s a mediocre film that fails to frighten, scare or even shock you. A typically predictable ‘scary’ movie, The Woman in Black 2 is nothing but a one-time watch.

Which movies have been your favorite this month? Which are on your ‘to-watch’ list? Let us know!
