Peppered with references to our favorite on-screen romances, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is perfect for every Bollywood fanatic.
The film tells the story of Kavya Pratap Singh (Alia Bhatt), a feisty young girl who is engaged to an NRI. Kavya refuses to go through with her wedding without a "Kareena wala designer lehenga". Her search for the perfect lehenga takes her to Delhi, where she crosses paths with Rakesh "Humpty" Sharma (Varun Dhawan). Boy meets girl, they fall in love and Humpty sets out to prove that he’s better than her fiancé, Angad (Siddharth Shukla).
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania starts off on a promising note. The first few minutes of the movie are filled with witty zingers, groovy songs and a remarkable energy. Unfortunately, this quickly fizzles out and the film starts feeling slow and predictable.
Alia Bhatt is charming and lovable as the spunky girl from Ambala. Her performance and the chemistry she shares with Varun Dhawan drive the movie. To add to this, the film also has a stellar supporting cast; including Ashutosh Rana, Kenneth Desai and Siddharth Shukla. Each of the actors add a distinct flavor to the film, making it worth a watch.
However, the film’s tongue-in-cheek Bollywood references are its real highlights. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania references movies ranging from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Jab We Met to Koi… Mil Gaya, making it a delight for every Bollywood buff!
This is also what keeps Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania from being truly great. The flimsy premise and predictable plot are pale in comparison to the movies it pays homage to.
Though Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania has its funny moments, it seems as if some of the best ones have already been shown in the trailers. Director Shashank Khaitan also tries to make his directorial debut a blend of comedy and drama, but the tone shifts a little too often to be effective. To make matters worse, the film is also a tad too long, with more than just a few redundant scenes.
All things considered, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is far from being the next great love story. However, it is an entertaining film that rom-com fans are bound to enjoy.
Why should you watch this film?
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania has all the elements for an entertaining watch. Loveable characters? Good acting? An upbeat soundtrack? Check, check and check! Though it isn’t the rom-com to define this generation, it’s a good film you can enjoy over the weekend.
