ICC World T20 Match Predictions

And so it begins. The 6th ICC World T20 is now underway – the first to take place in India. You’d think India were hosting every second T20 tournament, but this is only the first time it has landed the biggest international tournament in this format. Five different teams have won the World Cups, while formidable teams like Australia, South Africa and New Zealand are yet to win this trophy. 35 matches will be played over three weeks, with the final set to be held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata

ICC World Cup 2016 Match Predictions

Here are my bold, foolish result predictions for each of the 35 matches:

QUALIFIERS

Hong Kong v/s Zimbabwe

Nagpur

Prediction: Zimbabwe

Remarks: Haven’t seen too much of both teams, but Zimbabwe do have some familiar players.

Afghanistan v/s Scotland

Nagpur

Prediction: Afghanistan

Remarks: After failing to make the Asia Cup (lost to UAE), they will be looking to continue their inspirational run towards the elite, ever since they broke in five years ago.

Bangladesh v/s Netherlands

Dharamsala

Prediction: Bangladesh

Remarks: One of the strongest Asian teams this time around.

Ireland v/s Oman

Dharamsala

Prediction: Ireland

Remarks: Some returning faces, but they almost always spring a few surprises every ICC tournament.

Scotland v/s Zimbabwe

Nagpur

Prediction: Scotland

Remarks: Perhaps an upset, finally.

Afghanistan v/s Hong Kong

Nagpur

Prediction: Afghanistan

Remarks: Should be easy.

Oman v/s Netherlands

Dharamsala

Prediction: Netherlands

Remarks: Haven’t seen much of Oman, but Netherlands aren’t mugs on the field.

Bangladesh v/s Ireland

Dharamsala

Prediction: Bangladesh

Remarks: This is the match that could decide the group – two of the strongest teams, facing off. Bangladesh’s to lose.

Afghanistan v/s Zimbabwe

Nagpur

Prediction: Afghanistan

Remarks: A big match, which the Afghans must win to ensure qualification.

Hong Kong v/s Scotland

Nagpur

Prediction: Scotland

Remarks: Irrelevant, but Scotland the favourites.

Ireland v/s Netherlands

Dharamsala

Prediction: Ireland

Remarks: Big match, in case Bangladesh slip up. Traditional minnow rivals – tough to separate.

Bangladesh v/s Oman

Dharamsala

Prediction: Bangladesh

Remarks: None

QUALIFIERS: Bangladesh (Group A), Afghanistan (Group B)

GROUP STAGES (10 teams, 2 groups)

India v/s New Zealand

Nagpur

Prediction: India

Remarks: A tough opening game for India, but NZ isn’t known to thrive in these conditions. Still, won’t be easy.

Pakistan v/s Bangladesh

Kolkata

Prediction: Bangladesh

Remarks: Could be a repeat of the Asia Cup, if Pakistan don’t get their batting act together. The inclusion of Ahmed Shehzad (read “Pakistan ka Kohli”, if only in style) at the last moment can help.

England v/s West Indies

Mumbai

Prediction: England

Remarks: The West Indians are traditionally explosive T20 specialists, but not having Narine will hurt them. Expect a six-filled game on a small ground.

Sri Lanka v/s Afghanistan

Kolkata

Prediction: Sri Lanka

Remarks: Depleted, but strong enough to overcome minnows.

Australia v/s New Zealand

Dharamsala

Prediction: Australia

Remarks: Tough to see Australia losing with their assortment of all-rounders.

England v/s South Africa

Mumbai

Prediction: South Africa

Remarks: Expect an AB special on a pitch he truly loves. This group will be thrown wide open.

India v/s Pakistan

Dharamsala

Prediction: India

Remarks: The World Cup hoodoo will continue, in perhaps the most-watched match of the year.

South Africa v/s Afghanistan

Mumbai

Prediction: South Africa

Remarks: None

Sri Lanka v/s West Indies

Bangalore

Prediction: West Indies

Remarks: Gayle playing at his spiritual home. Can’t get better.

Australia v/s Bangladesh

Bangalore

Prediction: Australia

Remarks: This is the match that will decide which of the two will go through to the semis. Australia, by an inch.

New Zealand v/s Pakistan

Chandigarh

Prediction: New Zealand

Remarks: The battle of the bowlers

England v/s Afghanistan

Delhi

Prediction: England

Remarks: England has a knack of losing to minnows, but not this time – with the likes of Hales and Buttler in form.

India v/s Bangladesh

Bangalore

Prediction: India

Remarks: Battle of the spinners

Australia v/s Pakistan

Chandigarh

Prediction: Australia

Remarks: Warner, Watson, Finch, Maxwell, Marsh, Smith. That is all.

South Africa v/s West Indies

Nagpur

Prediction: West Indies

Remarks: Finally, the West Indians will wake up. They defeated the Proteas away last year, too.

New Zealand v/s Bangladesh

Kolkata

Prediction: Bangladesh

Remarks: New Zealand’s bogey team in these conditions.

England v/s Sri Lanka

Delhi

Prediction: England

Remarks: Sri Lanka will be dethroned.

West Indies v/s Afghanistan

Nagpur

Prediction: West Indies

Remarks: None

India v/s Australia

Chandigarh

Prediction: Australia

Remarks: Battle for top spot in the group. Could be close, but this could be India’s only splutter on the way to the final.

South Africa v/s Sri Lanka

Delhi

Prediction: South Africa

Remarks: Easy win.

GROUP 1: England, South Africa and West Indies will finish on three wins each – taking it down to Net Run Rate. Only two will qualify here. My money is on England and South Africa, because West Indies has a tendency to crash and burn when they lose.

GROUP 2: Australia and India will be clear qualifiers.

SEMIS: Australia v/s South Africa, India v/s England

Final: India v/s South Africa

Winner: India

And I am not only saying this because I’m Indian!
