In a League of Their Own

The Karnataka Premier League’s tag line reads ‘It’s your time to shine’, and while they gear up for the fourth edition, it sure does provide the perfect platform to do just that.

In a cricket crazy country that hosts the cash rich Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL), you can be sure that the BCCI‘s state associations will follow suit to groom their own lads to bring them the coveted crown. And Karnataka seems to have done a fantastic job till date. The Karnataka Premier League(KPL) is in its fourth year and only seems to be growing in popularity and as a source to scout young talent.

Most of us were glued to our television screens during the IPL auctions, waiting for the gavel to fall and welcome a new player to what we have grown to consider ‘our team’. The shocking buy that had everyone talking was the addition of KC Cariappa to Kolkata Knight Riders for an unbelievable ₹ 2.4 crore and the price he commanded was a result of a great performance in the Karnataka Premier League. This is not the only success story coming from the KPL, which has already helped IPL discover talented players like J. Suchith (Mumbai Indians) and Shishir Bhavane (Royal Challengers Bangalore).

Talking about big names in the league, this year will also see the likes of Stuart Binny, who was the biggest buy in the KPL 2015 auction, play forNamma ShivamoggaRobin UthappaMayank AgarwalVinay KumarAbhimanyu Mithun and KL Rahul who have donned the India jersey will bring their skills to the league as well.

And if this wasn’t exciting enough, former Test cricketers Venkatesh PrasadSunil Joshi and David Johnson will play for the All Stars Celebrity teamcalled the ‘Rockstars’, which will be captained by Kannada film actor Sudeep. The fourth season will also witness the introduction of the Eliminator, similar to the IPL and will offer the teams finishing in the top two, an additional chance of making it to the final.

With the star attractions this year and if the past is any indication as well, the KPL will continue to be one of the most successful franchise-based domestic tournaments and we are looking forward to all the fun and excitement the tournament promises to offer.
