Gone are the days when women were seen only in front of the camera. In the last decade, we have seen a huge participation of women in different aspects of filmmaking. They have excelled as a producer, writer, cinematographer, director and so on. And we are indeed proud of it and are dreaming of a time when there will be gender equality in its true sense. Out of all, the ones which hog (unintentionally, maybe) the maximum limelight is the directors. As it’s not possible to mention all of them, we would be drawing your attention to a few who grabbed the maximum headlines.
She made her debut with Turning 30 (2011). The movie had Gul Panag and Purab Kohli in the lead. It didn’t receive positive reviews and had fallen flat at the box-office. Her second movie Lipstick Under My Burkha is releasing this Friday which has already won several accolades in the International Film Festival circuit. With just two movies, she is among the favorites of many. Read our review of Lipstick Under My Burkha and you will know what an ace director she is.
Divya Khosla Kumar
Her first movie Yaariyan (2014) was a sleeper hit. It was a coming-of-age romantic youth film. The second one Sanam Re (2016) was commercially successful, thanks to the controlled budget in which the film was made. She is definitely a noteworthy director and we are eagerly waiting for her next with Akshay Kumar.
She is a brand in Bollywood. Though she is more popular as a choreographer but has also proved that the director's cap also fits her well. Except for Tees Maar Khan, all other films were blockbusters. There are speculations that her next movie is about girl power which will be produced by Shah Rukh Khan and have two female debutants playing the lead. Well, it seems Farah is trying to do something out of her comfort zone. Kudos!
Konkona Sen Sharma
She has recently made her debut with A Death In The Gunj. And like her acting, everyone was impressed with her direction too. The movie received rave reviews and is considered as one of the best movies of the year. It was one of those rare movies which will completely blow you. Don’t believe us. Read our review here.
Meghna is better known for her writing skills. Who would have thought that she will impress us all by saying Action & Cut. Her last release Talvar (2015) was widely appreciated. Her upcoming Raazi starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal have already become the talk of the town as it’s based on Harinder S. Sikka's novel Calling Sehmat.
She has proved her mettle with Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Talaash: The Answer Lies Within. Her upcoming Gold is one of the most awaited movies of 2018. The film is a biopic on the life of hockey player Balbir Singh which will be played by khiladi Akshay Kumar. We don’t think you need any more reason to watch Gold.
Zoya is one of the most favorite directors of urban movie lovers. Her movies like Luck by Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and Dil Dhadakne Do are arguably the best among the lot that released in the last decade. The upcoming Gully Boy which will see Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt pairing for the first time is touted to be one of the biggest movies that will release in 2018.
These are the few who have left an impact. We are eager to know your pick. Let us know the same by leaving your comments.
