Indru Netru Naalai: Film Review – Kollywood’s impressive sci-fi film!

With a crisp story, neat screenplay and good execution; director Ravi Kumar‘s Indru Netru Naalai is a sci-fi film whicht grabs your complete attention. Without making it seem like a cliched sci-fi film that usually averts disasters, Netru Indru Naalai takes on the theme of time travel and teleportation.

Most of the time, the plot of a sci-fi film is fully set in an unrealistic backdrop of an electronic city. With the title scroll telling us that it’s fifty years into the future, Netru Indru Naali begins of a similar premise. But, instead focusing on this electronic city set in the future, the plot is set in the present. And this makes it relatable.

One of the common elements seen in a sci-fi film is use of tech-geek terms, uncommon to the viewer. Thankfully, this is put to minimal use in the film. The characterization is a highlight in this film. We are introduced to a mad-scientist-nerd kind of a guy. A type of character you would see in the ’90s style Hollywood films. But he’s not like them. He’s called the mechanic, the one who can repair all electronic gadgets. The scene where he’s told to repair a mixer is funny! The scene where they transport themselves to the pre-independence era is definitely innovative. This also means that the humor in this film is too casual. The humor level is increased with the help of Karunakaran’s presence as well. The way the film interconnects three different subplots makes this film’s story interesting.

The film’s lead actor, Vishnu Vishal has a niche for choosing nice scripts, and he delivers a good performance with this film. You only he could improve his performance in the emotional scenes. Mia George has little to do. In fact, the film characterizes her as the usual heroine of Tamil cinema. And even their love track might seem that way. The fact that there aren’t any random placements of songs, or a duet, is a relief!

The premise of the film could’ve been better, though. By the way it transcends back-and-forth to the present and the past, it starts getting a little confusing. This in turn makes the run-time seem lengthy! As the film proceeds, you realize that the final sequence is tense and almost grips you.

Why you should watch this film?

A Kollywood sci-fi film might not be at par with today’s Hollywood style of storytelling. And it doesn’t intend to do so. It has its own charm and it conveys that quite well. Go for it if you’re in a mood to watch a sci-fi film, Kollywood style!
