Is Diwali really auspicious for Bollywood?

The festive season is here and once again, there’s a huge film releasing on Diwali. Yes, this year Sallu bhai got both the Eid and Diwali slots. After the blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijaan, he has Prem Ratan Dhan Payo releasing, which marks his return as ‘Prem’. The film’s title track is everywhere and even Shah Rukh Khan and his Dilwale team were Dubsmashing to it. Going by the hype, it will certainly make a lot of money. After all, the film has all the essential elements of a family entertainer. But do all films that release during this festival do well? Here’s a look at the other films that tried to get a Diwali bonus at the BO.

2014: Happy New Year

After the successful Om Shanti Om which released on Diwali in 2007, Farah Khan and Shah Rukh were back with Happy New Year last year. But even with the starstudded cast consisting of Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani, the film didn’t live up to the hype.

2013: Krrish 3

The third part of the trilogy (after Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish) came out on Diwali day in 2013. The film was termed as the weakest of the lot but made a lot of money due to the superhero’s popularity with kids.

2012: Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardaar

Both the films released on the same day in 2012, and there was a huge fight for screens. While neither of them impressed the critics, Jab Tak Hai Jaan attracted more of the multiplex crowd while Son of Sardaar did well in smaller towns.

2011: Ra. One

Shah Rukh’s most ambitious project, Ra. One was released in 2011 and the actor went all out with the promotions. Sadly, the film was rejected by both the critics and the audience. The makers had planned to make it a franchise but seeing the response received by the first, we guess they shelved
the idea.

2010: Golmaal 3 and Action Replayy

Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal franchise already had a lot going for it and the third part did very well. The same can’t be said for Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Action Replayy- the film bombed as Golmaal 3 was the audience’s first choice.
