Jackpot: Film Review

Let me start by saying that a film cannot rest on a hot woman’s great body and good you-know-what. When you get a few non-actors together, there is little hope that the film shall come out well. Of course, there is a lot of respect that great theatre-cum-film actors such as Naseeruddin Shah and Makarand Deshpande have earned for themselves in the industry. However, that in no way means that a lazy script and a half-hearted attempt at making a film can save it at the Box Office. For those who wish to watch the film only for Sunny Leone, may find themselves a tad-bit disappointed too. Yes, she looks gorgeous, but that’s it. What one may look for in a film is more expression, read: facial expression, than the other parts of the body doing the talking for you.

Jackpot is a film that tries its best to be a story based on a con. Hence, the confusing bit. It is only a well-thought of idea, its execution got lost somewhere. Based in Goa, Jackpot is the name of a casino in a boat, that is owned by Boss aka Naseeruddin Shah. Protagonists Sachiin Joshi and Sunny Leone work in the casino and subsequently help their boss plan a con on his customers. Instead, he gets conned in his own con-game. OMG! There’s so much con in the film that I feel I have been conned out of my brains at present.

Naseeruddin Shah is such a wonderful actor that it is a treat to watch him on screen. What I witnessed however, was mockery in the name of a sinister villain. Take his role in Mohra, for example. Probably the director was looking to make Naseeruddin Shah reprise his role as an eccentric don in Bombay Boys, that unfortunately did not happen. Same is the case with Makarand Deshpande. It’s sad. Nothing else. If you want a boom at the Box Office (pun intended), please be kind to your viewers’ sensibilities when investing so much time and effort in a film.
