Verdict: This spectacular sequel will leave you wanting more.
Witty banter, heart-touching monologues and a fight for justice is everything we want to see in a courtroom drama. The 2013-released Jolly LLB stood out and won hearts for being such a hard-hitting movie with an impish heart. It was applauded for giving its lead character shades of grey, who in the end pulls through in the fight for justice. With some spectacular performances in the first movie from Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani and Saurabh Shukla, the expectations obviously were high when a sequel to Jolly LLB was announced. And boy, have they been met with Jolly LLB 2!
Raising the stakes higher this time, Subhash Kapoor delivers on his promise to deliver a powerful movie in a lighthearted style.
We see Jagdishwar Mishra (Akshay Kumar), a B.A.L.L.B who is the 15th assistant of Rizvi Sahab, a renowned lawyer in Kanpur. Jagdishwar aka Jolly does odd jobs for him and on the side uses his wit to fight cases on the side. He is in dire need of money and he dupes a pregnant lady Hina (Sayani Gupta) so he could get his hands on some. His duplicity is revealed and Jolly takes it upon himself to right all the wrongs that were done. Enter Pramod Mathur (Annu Kapoor), a defence lawyer who has a Lucknowi dialect and Justice Tripathi (Saurabh Shukla). Once the characters are placed firmly in the plot, the fight for justice begins with several twists and turns along the way.
Apart from a crisp flow of story, special care has been taken by the director to give depth to each character on screen. Jagdishwar Mishra is far from being a do-gooder. His aim in life is to own a private chamber and everything he does is a means to that end. His wife Pushpa (Huma Qureshi), is ever supporting but she has her own quirks like her love for whiskey and her obsession with Gucci dresses. You also see her sometimes saving the day and sometimes devouring a meal cooked by her husband. Pramod Mathur is a sophisticated and a well-respected lawyer who has a rate card for the services he provides. He will also charge you for tea, biscuits and even a fan whenever you meet him. A golf aficionado, he can use any means to win a case. Justice Tripathy is planning his only daughter's wedding while dealing with the bucket-full of cases. He isn't particularly without his biases but he believes in the power of the judicial system. All the actors chosen are known for their comic timing and they deliver.
The story more or less followed a pattern similar to the last movie with some setbacks faced by Jolly while fighting the case. He also delivers some powerful monologues towards the end. The monologues are important, because they are the showstealers and ones that won't be forgotten soon. The flow of the story is crisp with a brief introduction of the titular character and a straight dive into the essence of the plot, which leads to the much-awaited courtroom scenes. The court scenes are superbly executed. For example, prepare to see a room laden with files in poor conditions instead of the fancy ones we otherwise see in the movies. The plight of the judges as they deal with the enormous workload is subtly yet expertly displayed.
Akshay Kumar once again delivers a cracker of a performance transforming himself into Jolly. You don't see the star behind the character and that is commendable. No amount of praise is enough for Saurabh Shukla. Have fun catching his references to the first movie and as you see him making trying decisions. Annu Kapoor nails the Lucknow dialect and his scenes with Akshay Kumar as they banter are worth watching. A special mention to Sayani Gupta who nails the role of Hina. We would definitely want to see more of her in future.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
If you have watched Jolly LLB, this movie is an obvious must-watch too. The movie delivers on everything it promises with a perfect blend of humor and drama. Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla's chemistry on screen is something you should not miss. Even with all the humor, the film never loses its focus.
