Saying that David O. Russell has found his winning combination would be an understatement. After Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, the director is back with his holy trinity of actors in Joy.
The film tells the story of Joy Mangano, the woman who invented the self-wringing Miracle Mop. Joy traces her journey from rags to riches, as she fights to make it on her own in an environment that isn't always conducive to success, especially for women. Held back by an unsupportive father (Robert De Niro), a deadbeat ex-husband (Edgar Ramirez) and a combative mother (Virginia Madsen), it seems like the odds are stacked against her. But one little invention, and a little help from her family, paves the way for Joy's ultimate triumph.
It goes without saying that Jennifer Lawrence's performance makes the film worth watching. Though the supporting cast comprises phenomenal actors, Lawrence outshines them all. The actress, who won a Golden Globe for her work in the film, deserves every bit of praise and acclaim coming her way. The supporting cast features stellar actors who do not disappoint. Robert De Niro, Isabella Rossellini, Edgar Ramirez and Bradley Cooper do complete justice to their characters. Unfortunately, the script focuses mostly on Joy's character, which keeps the others from becoming memorable.
Though David O. Russell's latest venture starts out strong, it does lose steam towards the climax. While it's great to see Joy triumph, her journey to the top is infinitely more intriguing than her success. Still, the script features the right balance of the two, making it worth watching.
One more thing worth noting about Joy is how true it stays to Mangano's story. Though it may not feature over-the-top dramatic scenes or a 'cha-ching' moment, the film is honest, simple and uplifting. Don't miss this one!
Why You Should Watch this Movie:
Two words: Jennifer Lawrence. Though the actress has a series of accolades under her belt, she delivers her finest performance (yet) in Joy.
