Verdict: Avoid unfair comparisons and just have fun.
Remakes of classics, especially comedy classics, can go either way – a great film to remember or straight up hazardously wrong. The remake of the Salman Khan starrer Judwaa (1997), Judwaa 2, is neither end of the extreme, which just goes to show that the movie has found its own place and serves the exact same purpose that Judwaa stood for – making you laugh.
Judwaa 2 is mainly a story about twin brothers who get separated at birth, lead very different lives, are so different than each other and have a deep connection with each other (reflex action – you cannot make such things up). The twin brothers (played by Varun Prem Dhawan and Varun Raja Dhawan) fall in love with Samara (Taapsee Pannu) and Alishka (Jacqueline Fernandez) respectively. Due to some strange circumstances (we cannot stress more upon how strange), both the brothers land in London and the movie that you were waiting for starts to unfold. There are villains to defeat, there is Bollywood masala, action, extremely popular songs of the 90s with a twist, the recreation of your favorite Judwaa scenes and there's a very anticipated cameo.
Anupam Kher, Pavan Malhotra, Rajpal Yadav, Atul Parchure, Sachin Khedekar and the rest of the supporting cast have taken the comedy quotient high up. The actresses don't have many explicitly funny moments but they give their best. The older storylines have been altered a little to make the film more relatable for everyone and not just Judwaa fans. The background score retains most of the tunes from the original and that's a huge relief! It only adds to the fun. Now the biggest question – can anyone carry off the twin act as good as Salman did? Yes! Varun Dhawan is just as endearing, funny and charming. He has played both the characters so differently that it's almost like two different actors were cast in those roles. Both the Varuns are funny in their own ways. The one-liners are quite hilarious and most of them hit the mark.
