Kanal: Film Review – Nothing Out of the Ordinary

Verdict: A performance-led movie that will not disappoint

Making Malayalam films is the biggest gamble these days. With so many above average movies, average movies don’t really stand a chance. Kanal, as average as it is, might work, all thanks to Mohanlal.

The movie has an interesting story. The only problem is that the story could have been narrated in a much more interesting manner. By narration, we don’t mean the actual narration, by Prithviraj Sukumaran, which is excellent… but the narrative. Three people are connected by this plot. John David (Mohanlal) meets Anantharaman (Anoop Menon) on a train. The lives of these two characters are also connected to Kuruvila Mathew (Atul Kulkarni), a story the film introduces at the very beginning.

The film has been shot beautifully, and several cameos surprisingly add to the pace of the narrative. Yet, somehow, the film begins very slowly. You need to be patient to watch the complex story unravel and you will soon be thankful you were so.

We will not reveal the plot, but will tell you that the performances are good. Mohanlal delivers as expected, as does Atul Kulkarni. Anoop Menon and Sheelu Abraham also do a relatively good job. Nikita Thukral could have been used more as could have Honey Rose. Innocent also manages to humor you with his role as a bar-owner searching for a nagamanikyam (snake-jewel).

Ouseppachan has scored good music for the film, but the only track that stayed with us was Pathukke Entho by Neha Nair. M Padmakumar has managed to make a film that entertains, but could have been so much better. The film is not exciting and that is quite a downer.

Watch the movie once, it’s not disappointing in any way. Just don’t expect a blockbuster. Malayalam films featuring veteran actors have to keep up with the energy of films that are driven by younger casts.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

The performances. This is good acting. Yup!
