Kanam: Film Review – Engaging and Exciting!

Verdict: A gripping emotional thriller with horror elements.

After the stupendous success of Fidaa and Middle Class Abbayi (MCA), Sai Pallavi is back in an author-backed role with a bilingual movie titled Kanam in Telugu and Diya in Tamil. This also marks the debut for Sai Pallavi in Tamil. Directed by A.L Vijay and produced by Lyca Productions, Kanam is touted to be a horror-thriller-drama. Naga Shourya plays the male lead in the film, which also stars Veronika Arora, Nithin Gandhari, Priyadarshi, Santhana Bharathi, Rekha, Nizhalgal Ravi, and Stunt Silva in prominent roles. The music and background score is composed by Sam C.S. and the cinematography is handled by Nirav Shah. The editing department is led by Anthony. Sai Pallavi must be applauded for portraying the role of a mother at the initial stages of a blossoming career. Let’s see what Vijay had to tell the audiences with Kanam.

Kanam Film Review - BookMyShow

What’s Kanam About:

The story starts with Tulasi (Sai Pallavi) and Krishna (Naga Shaurya) as teenage lovers. Tulasi gets pregnant at the age of 19 and at the insistence of doctor, Tulasi’s uncle, and both their parents,  they decide to abort the child with intention of focusing on their career. After five years, they both get married with the blessings of their parents. The newly-married couple moves to a new flat gifted by Krishna’s dad. Tulasi was stuck in time right since her abortion and is still upset about losing her unborn. She names the unborn child Diya (Veronika) and keeps drawing faceless pictures of her growing up imagining what she would have looked like. Things go topsy-turvy when the people involved in abortion get killed one after the other. Agni (Priyadarshi) is assigned the task of investigating the culprits behind the murders. Eventually, Tulasi realizes that Krishna will be the next target. Who is behind the murders and how Tulasi saves Krishna forms the rest of Kanam.

What Works:

Sai Pallavi, as usual, stole the show with her spellbound performance. She was terrific in the role of a mother and her screen presence is a treat to watch. Naga Shourya did a fantastic job as Krishna and the chemistry between the lead pair is awesome.  Baby Veronica makes an impressive debut and is the main protagonist of the movie. Kanam is very engaging with good suspense elements throughout. Fantastic visuals, excellent background score, and crisp editing are the major advantages on the technical front. Priyadarshi was able to bring in some laughs in this horror-thriller.

What Could Have Been Better:

The way the story goes about dealing with crunch situations could have been showcased even more convincingly, but Kanam still remains engaging throughout.

Why You Should Watch:

Though a horror thriller, Kanam gives a good message against female foeticide and is a must watch for its unique storyline and excellent performances.
