Khoobsurat: Film Review: Bollywood’s very own Disney Princess!

Recreating classics is a difficult job. Especially, when it comes to timeless films like Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Khoobsurat. But, Shashanka Ghosh’s Khoobsurat which is loosely-based on Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The film starring Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan definitely managed to keep up with all the buzz it created.

Coming from a director whose previous films include Quick Gun Murugun and Mumbai Cutting, Khoobsurat is a brave attempt. Shashanka Ghosh balances the perkiness of a commercial Bollywood film, and the charm of a Disney fairytale with panache.

Before the release of the film, there was criticism that the new Khoobsurat might turn out to be a thin remake of the classic film, starring Rekha. Even though Ghosh’s film couldn’t match the old charm of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s classic, it still breaks free from the criticism and will without doubt impress the ‘selfie-loving’ generation.

The story is simple. Dr. Mili Chakraborty is a quirky physiotherapist and a hopeless romantic. Her life takes a royal twist when she is assigned to treat the paraplegic Shekhar Rathore (Aamir Raza Hussain), Raja of Sambalgarh. Mili wasn’t looking for love, but hunting for new selfie locations. But, Cupid strikes and she falls for the hot prince Vikramaditya Rathore aka Vikku aka Princy (Fawad Khan). But, is the feeling mutual? Blessed are those who still believe in fairytales.

One relieving factor is that there is not much melodrama. The characters are likable. Surprisingly, even Sonam Kapoor seemed to have improved with her acting prowess. Only that she passed on her blatantly loud acting prowess to Kirron Kherr who plays the character of Manju – Mili’s Punjabi mother. Ratna Pathak as Nirmala Devi Rathore is a joy to watch. Maya Sarabhai wrapped in royalty. Can you imagine the intensity? Fawad Khan is the suave Prince Charming of our dreams. Fawad looks a little stiff in some parts, but he carries on his subtle royal charm smoothly. Sonam Kapoor, of course, is our very own Disney Princess. She can carry off the brightest and happiest of colors with style. As the funky Dr. Mili Chakraborty, Sonam does a pretty good job. When it comes to style statement, no one can match Sonam’s flamboyance. Although she fails miserably in imitating a Delhi girl in parts, she manages to look cute. Aditi Rao Hydari and Cyrus Sahukar have a blink and a miss role. The duo managed to do their part without any crease.

The music by Sneha Khanwalkar is edgy, but not memorable. Only few tracks like Maa Ka Phone, Naina and Preet might make its way into your playlist.

Why should you watch this film?
Khoobsurat is an entertaining and fun film. Though it might not measure up to the standards of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s classic, this fairytale might charm you. It’s not always that we get to see a vivacious princess in Bollywood.
