Kollywood goes rural in 2014

The Tamil film industry usually witnesses a variety of films every year, some of which are based in concrete jungles, while the rest boast of a simple rural set up. The former mostly attracts the multiplex audience, while the latter has a mass appeal. Some of these films based in villages, have created a huge impact on the movie-goers.

These films often create a nostalgic testimony to the former non-modernized state that people lived in. The year 2014 opened with films like Namma Gramam, Veeram and Rummy which were all set in villages. In the next couple of months, Kollywood will witness more such trendsetting films. Below we list some of the most-anticipated films of this year: 
 
 
 
Even though actor Vishu is only a few movies old, he has been experimental in choosing his roles, where the story is the front-runner. After his highly-praised performance of a fisherman in Neerparavali, the actor will be seen next as a photographer in his new project. The film, set in the ‘80s, revolves around the fictitious town of Mundasupatti where people hold a superstition that having their picture taken would reduce their life expectancy. What will be interesting to watch is the depiction of the film camera to the audience, who have been gadget addicts in this digital world. C.V.Kumar, currently recognized as a pioneer who aides new talent, is producing this film.
 
Appuchi Gramam
 
 
Since the beginning of 2011, director A.R.Murgadoss’s associates have been creating ripples in tinsel-town. After making successful films like Yengeyum Yepodhum and Maan Karate, there is yet another associate, V.I.Anand, who has ventured into direction, with a film titled Appuchi Gramam. If you thought this is just another film that concentrates on the life of villagers, then you haven’t paid attention to this one yet. Touted to be a sci-fi thriller, the film revolves around an astounding incident where a meteorite hits a village, only to alter the lives of the villagers completely. The false meteorite set created in Palladam became so popular, that it attracted tourists to the spot. We’ll have to just wait and watch if the Tamil audience accepts a unique genre like this.
 
 
 
Director Sundar.C is back this year to provide your doze of rib-tickling comedy, but with a difference. His next film, Aranmanai will be a Horror film, a first-of-sorts for the director. Partially shot in a village, the team had a huge structure resembling a haunted mansion erected in Hyderabad for a whopping two crores. Hansika Motwani will play the role of a village belle, possessing supernatural powers. Certain hair-raising incidents reported on the film’s set, have been doing the rounds, already giving everyone an eerie feeling. 
 
 
 
If there is a Tamil movie that revolves around the lives of children, then it is sure to have scenes that have kids enjoying their summer vacations to the fullest. Poo Varasam Pee Pee, hence won’t be an exception. Directed by debutante Halitha Shameem, the film revolves around the lives of three school-going kids and their summer adventure. Shot over 60 days in and around the exquisite locations of Pollachi and Dharapuram, the film is sure to bring out the fun side among adults as well. The film releases this Friday, May 30
 
Naalu Policeum Nalla Iruntha Oorum
 
 
If you think Arulnidhi, you think off-beat films, and his next film will fall into a similar genre. Naalu Policeum nalla iruntha oorum is set to be a unique subject, which is set in a village where no crime takes place, but still houses a police station. Arulnidhi plays the role of a cop in the film. An unpredictable turn of events forms the rest of the plot. After his last film Oru Kaniyum Moondru kalavaningalum, fans of the actor are sure to love his appearance in this comedy-oriented film as well.
