Kollywood Welcomes Sci-fi films

Sci-fi is easily one of the most fascinating genres in movies. Partly serious, partly fun; such movies take the audience to an entirely different world, a parallel universe. Some of the common themes in sci-fi films are time travel and post-apocalyptic crises. We are seeing Tamil cinema experimenting with the genre too, which definitely is putting the industry on a positive course. Some such films are made on a moderate budget while others are being made with top-league actors.

A New Wave
The film that perfectly holds the position of being an interesting sci-fi flick is director Shankar‘s Enthiran that starred superstar Rajinikanth in the lead. The film is about a scientist and a robot (designed by the scientist himself). This big-budget film created and broke new records at the box office. And in 2017, we’ll get to enjoy a sequel of this film and watch our favorite robot – Chitti on screen.
However, new gen film makers are giving a new twist to this genre. They add a bit of the local flavor and deliver the film on a moderate budget. A few examples would be Appuchi Gramam, Indru Netru Naalai and Miruthan. In fact, director Shakti Soundar Rajan has plans to make a sequel to Mirthan, and may make a film based on space travel. Another movie one should look forward to is Vikram K Kumar’s 24. Starring Suriya, this film deals with the subject of time travel. The superb trailer offered a glimpse of some high-tech gizmos and gadgets.
Will this pave way for other filmmakers to work on sci-fi films too? We’ll have to wait and watch. Meanwhile, you can watch the trailer of the much-awaited 24 here.
