Kuldip Patwal: I Didn’t Do It!: Film Review – Real & Thought Provoking

Verdict: A twisted tale of conspiracy, politics and its dirty business.

After giving brilliant performances in Tanu Weds Manu and Hindi Medium, Deepak Dobriyal is back with another intriguing role in Kuldip Patwal: I Didn't Do It. The movie is directed by Remi Kohli and Dobriyal is playing the titular character in this one.

What's Kuldip Patwal: I Didn't Do It! About:

The movie revolves around Kuldip Patwal (Deepak Dobriyal) who is trying everything to make ends meet and get his family to live a better life. However, everything he tries is affected either by reservation or new political implementation or riots. He is now accused of a murder of the political leader (Parvin Dabas) of the current ruling party and is thrown in jail. He doesn't remember anything about the incident and pleads not guilty. But will he be able to get through this political trap? Or did he actually assassinate a politician who was the reason behind all his struggles?

What Works:

The movie banks on its actors. Deepak Dobriyal has portrayed a lower-middle-class man who is struggling every minute in his life. He has moved away from comedy for this role and proven his versatility once again. Gulshan Devaiah who plays Kuldip's defense lawyer has got his Punjabi dialect on point. He has basically played that one character who is loved by every person watching the movie and is the source of maximum entertainment throughout. Other supporting casts like Raima Sen, Parvin Dabas, Anurag Arora, Jameel Khan and others play their parts with ease too.

The pace of the movie is fast. It moves back and forth in time simultaneously connecting the dots. The filmmaker has beautifully picturized the life of a common man, a political leader trying to do his duties and everything in between, which are also the reason for all the mess. There are many political, cultural and directorial references throughout the movie that will either crack you up or drop your jaws.

What Could Have Been Better:

While trying to give it a new format, too many time leaps get confusing at times and you might lose the track of the story. However, in a way it also creates curiosity and the format can work both ways. There are some unnecessary sequences which could have been avoided to make the movie crisper.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

You can watch the movie just for the performances. Everyone from Deepak Dobriyal to the supporting cast has done an excellent job. Everything is kept real and the execution with the to and fro in time gives the movie its innovative edge. We recommend you catch this movie this weekend.
