Kung Fu Yoga: Film Review – The Jack of All Trades

Verdict: Brace yourself for some extreme hand-to hand combat

We love Jackie Chan! There, we said it. From his comic timing and endearing goofiness to his jaw-dropping ability to perform his own stunts, we have almost always been mesmerized by the man. Then again, we cannot deny Chan who personifies the word 'awesome' has been a part of a few turkeys. Chan returns with Kung Fu Yoga that best said, could have been a much better product.

Directed by Stanley Tong, the man the man behind some age old classics like Rumble in the Bronx and Supercop, Kung Fu Yoga falls short of expectations. The supporting cast of Aarif Rahman and Yixing Xhang  and their Indian counterparts, namely Disha Patani and Amyra Dastur live up to your expectations.

Kung Fu Yoga - Bookmyshow

When you go for a Jackie Chan movie, it’s the good ol’ Kung fu your eyes crave for even if the plot isn't the most entertaining one.Kung Fu Yoga begins quite abruptly with a history lesson and you straight away find yourself thrown right into the action. This could be both good and bad.

Tong unloads a ton of information at you in a 300-like animated style shot to perfection that leaves you breathless. As the dust settles, you return to the present time and that is where the plot begins to look rather generic. Jack (Jackie Chan) is one of China’s leading archaeologists, who is enlisted by Ashmita (Disha Patani) who happens to be a part-time professor and a princess. She requires Jack and his crew’s expertise in decoding an ancient map (which belonged to her ancestors) that leads to a long lost treasure. Enter Indian baddie a.k.a. Randall (Sonu Sood) whose sole aim is to loot the treasure for himself. Simple enough.

Let’s talk about the positives here. Chan’s stunt work and well-choreographed sequences deserve a round of applause. He singlehandedly carries the movie and even when he isn't on screen, you yearn for him. Amyra Dastur as Kyra and Aarif Rahman as Jones provide you with some comic relief at times but the Chan takes the center stage here. There’s a high intense car chase scene, which involves Chan and a lion. So, you can imagine. The movie has quite a few witty banters sprinkled throughout the movie but this in particular, when Chan and the lion have a one sided parle is the one to watch out for.

The dubbing seems awkward at times, which really muddles your entire movie watching experience. For a movie which has "Yoga" in its title, yoga has little to no on-screen presence. It’s loosely mentioned a few times here and there.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
If you are fan of martial arts/Kung fu or to simply put it – Jackie Chan, then there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn't watch this. Sonu Sood fans, there's a welcoming surprise for you. Disha Patani and Amyra Dastur are looking absolutely gorgeous. There, you have another reason to watch Kung Fu Yoga.
