Even the biggest short film fan has to admit that the medium has it hard. After all, it’s not easy for a 5-minute film to make the same impact as a full-length feature film or a television show. But once in a while, comes along a short film that manages to make a lasting impression. La Loteria is one of them.
Directed by Shahir Daud, the film follows the journey of Augusto Ramirez (Ismael Cruz Cordova), a young man who has managed to win the lottery that is a Green Card. As he waits to board his plan to America, Augusto looks back upon the biggest regrets of his life. Though this list includes other things like an unfortunate tattoo, it’s one regret that stands out in particular – lost love.
With a plot this heavy, La Loteria could’ve easily moved at a leisurely pace making it a tough watch even for a short film. Fortunately, the cast and crew manage to bring it to life in a charming and light-hearted fashion. This humor is never at the cost of the plot. The film is undeniably funny and it has a heart too. And isn’t that the perfect blend?
The short film also features remarkable acting by Ismael Cruz Cordova. He is the picture of a young man, who is unsure of where his life is headed. What makes his performance even better is the chemistry he shares with Ines Milans. Together, the duo is the embodiment of the sweetness and sincerity that make the film work.
