Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana: Film Review – A Royal Mess

Verdict: An enjoyable flick with way too many songs.

There has been a controversy around Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana as a political party protested against a scene in which a pregnant woman is taking the saat pheras. That scene did not make it to the final cut but even if it did, it wouldn't have much significance. Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana tries to address several issues, but the way they are handled, you can't take them seriously. However, it passes muster at being a timepass, a one-time watch at best.

Laali (Akshara Haasan) falls in love with Laaddoo (Vivaan Shah), a waiter at the cafe she frequently visits. The boy claims to belong to a rich household and has left home to learn things the hard way. After a few dates (and songs), Laali finds out about Laaddoo’s lower middle-class background. She, of course, forgives him and then heads to his hometown to meet his parents. Just when everything seems to be going right for the couple, Laali finds out she’s pregnant and Laddoo wants her to opt for an abortion. What follows are some melodramatic moments when Laaddoo’s parents decide to get Laali married to Veer (Gurmeet Choudhary) while her family is busy trying to get them back together. Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana is less of a film and more of a Hindi TV serial. There are way too many over-the-top moments and songs which make the runtime of 2 hours 10 minutes seem much longer.

Manish Harishankar, who has assisted Rajkumar Santoshi on multiple films, has not only directed Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana but has also written the screenplay and lyrics. As a director, he does a good job but there is only so much you can do with a muddled script. Akshara Hassan has a long way to go in terms of acting but she looks gorgeous throughout. This film has given Vivaan Shah a chance to showcase his talent and yes, he makes the most of it. The actor, who has played side roles for most of his career, shines as the simpleton Laaddoo, a guy not sure of what he wants in life. Sanjay Mishra, Darshan Jariwala and Saurabh Shukla are as competent as usual and at times overshadow the lead pair.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

If you don’t set your expectations too high, you might just enjoy Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. The movie has nothing new to offer but makes for a fun watch if you don’t have much to do this weekend.
