The Lego Movie is a brilliantly-crafted animated film. The directors have taken a simple childhood toy and given it prominence. The movie features the voice talents of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Allison Brie, Charlie Day, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson. The cast doesn’t stop there. There are many more amazing voices which make their presence known. The story is about a simple, everyday LEGO minifigure, Emmet (Chris Pratt), who lives an ordered life. Enter the girl, Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and boom.. everything snaps together. The ordinary takes a walk and the extra-ordinary leaps into the fray. Our hero, who doesn’t think that he is one, gets swept up in this wild adventure. With guidance from a blind wise-cracking wizard, Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman) and help from the Batman (Will Arnett); Emmet sets off to save his Lego world from the Evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell). Are you with me so far? In the course of the film, the audience is shown what it takes to change, to believe, to reach for the stars, and what it takes to be a hero. Each character has an aspect of human nature which shines through. In the end, the movie shows us what the true spirit of Lego.
Try to keep a track of all the various Lego characters that are shown. Doubtless, you will recognize more than a few. I know I did. That recollection brought back memories of childhood, of innocence, of hope, of dreams and hours of fun spent making things come to life.
