Verdict: Superb voice performances deliver yet another Lego masterpiece.
If you observe closely, the cats are taking over the world. They are in your house, all over YouTube and now they are in the new Lego movie. The Lego Ninjago Movie is the third of its kind and they are just getting started. Gone are the days where movies were only about daddy issues, social messages or just remarking on how awesome or sucky everything is. Now it is about loving this feline creatures and havoc they can cause. We saw the third Lego movie (which had incidentally more Lego product placement than the other two combined) and here's what we think about the movie.
What The Lego Ninjago Movie is About:
A boy enters an old relic shop where Mr. Liu proceeds to tell him the story of Ninjago. The story is very simple. In the small town of Ninjago off the coast of somewhere, there are six teenagers Lloyd (Dave Franco), Nya (Abbi Jacobson), Jay (Kumail Nanjiani), Kai (Michael Peña), Zane (Zach Woods), and Cole (Fred Armisen) who attend High School where they are bullied. But when Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux) strikes, these six teenagers take a Hall pass and become secret Ninjas who with their Mechs defeat Garmadon again. These six Ninjas are trained by Master Wu who is the brother of Lord Garmadon making Lloyd Garmadon's son. When Lloyd unleashes the ultimate weapon (a laser pointer), they are faced with a bigger enemy Meowthra (a cat).
This is yet another take on the Lego world. Where the first one was a mix of toy sets where you realize it was just a boy playing with those toys and the second one having no human interference at all, the third one stands out. Here just the narrative of Mr. Liu takes the form of Legos. The voice performances by Dave Franco, Jackie Chan and Justin Theroux are on point making the whole experience super fun. The story is fun and doesn't dull for a second. Also, the absence of pop culture references just for the sake of them really help.
What Could Have Been Better:
We hoped there were a few more Master Builder scenes which were the highlights of the previous movies. Also, it would have been better if the cat was Lego as well.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
The Lego franchise seems to be just getting better with time. They have something new with every movie and you must definitely check out what they have up their sleeves this time around. The opening and closing credits have a retro feel which is super fun. It is unlike the previous movies and that is refreshing. Also, there will be something really wrong with you if you don't want to get your hands on one of the Ninjago sets once you see the movie.
