India is a country of contrasts and that is the reason why on a land where Khajuraho Temples exist, we see the Censor Board getting restless at movies depicting our sexual realities. The latest example is Alankrita Shrivastava’s Lipstick Under My Burkha, produced by Prakash Jha and distributed by Balaji Motion Pictures. The film went through a long struggle and endless controversies to finally release in the theatres on July 21st after Pahlaj Nihalani called it a "lady-oriented". This left everyone confused as male-oriented fantasies such as Mastizaade and Grand Masti were films with contentious sexual scenes and audio pornography.
The film, however, won this fight with the help of Film Certificate Appelate Tribunal (FCAT). In some way, the movie has become a sort of liberation movement which is quite evident in the way the film was promoted on social media platforms. The film’s cast comprising the treasure trove of talent Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur, along with director Alankrita and Balaji’s lady boss Ekta Kapoor have been talking about themes of gender equality and sexual liberation of women in all ways possible.
Patriarchy is systemic in India and therefore movies like these are the need of the hour. The movie’s cast and crew have been doing a fantastic job through all their promotional content; some of which we would like to mention here.

Mallika Dua’s video featuring Konkona Sen and Ratna Pathak is downright hilarious. Watch it for yourself.
Promo videos for the Dialogues
The makers have released a series of dialogue promos that take the film’s sassy quotient several notches higher.
Well, the interviews are not just entertaining but filled with a lot of witty one liners by the cast and crew of the film.
Word Association Game
This video is full of sexual overtones and will make you giggle at every word that comes from the mouth of the stars playing the word game. Ratna Pathak, though, tries to play it differently.
YouTube Video – If Men Were Treated Like Women
This is one of their several promotional videos that cry out the need for a change in the patriarchal thinking of our society. If you are a guy, you must definitely watch this video. If you are girl, you must definitely watch this video as well.
We just can’t wait for this narrative of women’s right to expression and liberation to finally release this Friday. If you feel you have some important comments to make on the film, let us know in the comment below.
