Before Logan: X-Men Movies Timeline Explained

With the release of Logan, there are now 10 movies in the X-Men universe, including Deadpool. The movies take place over several years and some even skip backward and forward in time. There are a few continuity errors throughout the series, but if you can overlook minor changes to the storylines, there's an order you can watch the movies so they don't completely throw you off.

While you can see each movie on its own except the original X-Men trilogy, we recommended you to follow the X-Men timeline if you're completely unfamiliar with the mutants. The trouble is that the timeline doesn't coincide with the movie releases and there is an added confusion – the presence of two different timelines. To make it easy for you to sit through an X-Men marathon, we've arranged all the movies based on the year and timeline they take place in. Here's the correct order to see the X-Men movies:

X-Men: First Class (2011)

The movie takes place during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, making this the first movie in the X-Men timeline and showing us Charles and Erik's friendship and how the X-Men and the school were formed.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

This movie shows us when Wolverine was born and his life growing up from the 1800s to the Vietnam War, WWII, and the D-Day. But the rest of the movie takes place in 1981. This is where Logan gets his adamantium claws. While this is considered to be a disaster, this was an important movie in the X-Men timeline.

X-Men (2000)

This was the first X-Men movie that was released and started the successful chain of sequels and prequels and spin-offs. Set in the 21st century, it takes place around 2000-2003.

X2: X-Men United (2003)

The sequel to the X-Men picks off directly after the events of the first X-Men movie, so it can also be considered to take place in 2003.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

This takes place some time after the second X-Men movie that was released somewhere around the year 2006.

The Wolverine (2013)

This movie was a great improvement over the previous solo-Wolverine movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It takes place seven years after the events of The Last Stand, making this set in the year 2013.

Deadpool (2016)

Deadpool appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but his minor appearance is mostly ignored due to the continuity errors it creates. Deadpool is established to be set in 2016 and doesn't share much to do with the other timelines, apart from the two X-men characters, one of whom has only been a minor character in the comics, and off-hand references to the X-Men universe. The next Deadpool movie would possibly pick up after the events of the first.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Days of Future Past is a tricky movie because it starts out in 2023, but has Wolverine go back to his body in 1973 to change history, but has the movie occurring simultaneously in 2023. It also created an alternate timeline where some events of the movies listed above taking place between 1973 and 2023, didn't happen.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Apocalypse occurs in the timeline after Wolverine went back and changed history in Days of Future Past. It takes place in the new version of 1983 where Charles Xavier has founded the school and we see many notable mutants figuring their powers out. Consider this to be a flashback showing how the past changed after 1973.

Logan (2017)

Logan takes place in the alternate timeline of 2029, making it the last movie in the X-Men timeline. While Hugh Jackman won't be playing Wolverine anymore and we won't see Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier again, the movie will leave you with many questions that will only be answered in the upcoming movies.
