Review: High-school romances are always are a treat to watch. When you’ve just crossed your teens you wonder, “I wish this would happen to me” and when you’ve been a high school pass out for many years, you sigh and wonder “Why that never happened to me”! However, knowing what the audience will like and relate to is a gift, and making a film at the right time is insightful. In this case, the right time is "The Valentine Week".
Stories come and go, only few remain fresh in our minds over the years. LOL also came as that breath of fresh air this year. Although, it isn’t something we have not heard before owing to the fact that most of us have gone through a similar phase a few years back, while many of us are still there, the ripe age for all new things to happen. Moving over from say a “High School Musical” or The “Hanna Montana” series on television (also starring Miley Cyrus) and the mother-daughter relationship as in “Freaky Friday” or the quite recent “Because I Said So”, we have LOL, a remake of the hit French film starring Miley Cyrus as Lola and Demi Moore as her mother, Anne.
Lola is the adolescent who is burdened with all the issues of “the growing up years” while her mother Anne is a divorcee who is a friend and confidante to her daughter but tends to care so much that it evokes arguments. So Lola’s best friend is her computer, her diary where she spills all her secrets and a boy in her class named Kyle. It is quite predictable, that the boy loves the girl or the girl loves the boy but cannot say anything lest it should jeopardize their friendship. Also because Lola is dating another cute boy, Chad who happens to be Kyle’s bestie and band member. You read that right. There is a band. There are also family issues. Some parents are unsuspecting while some are overtly interested in what their child is up to. Very heard of? Well yes, I did mention the reason – its a High school romance.
Gossip Girl, the American sitcom also became quite a rage when it first came out. I believe that anything that spells romance and fits best in a situation, automatically sells. The good news is, LOL released first in India.
LOL is immensely watchable and will appeal mostly to the teenage crowd owing to Miley’s popularity with that age group. Demi Moore still looks very good. We thought her broken relationship with Ashton Kutcher would mean otherwise. It was good to see her back on screen. And oh, to mention all the eye candies, the boys were all too cute to make it to the toy shelves, while the new man in Anne’s life looked a copy of Tom Cruise ala Top Gun more than 20 years back. Kept the interest alive. Since it is genre specific, it depends on the viewer how many times they wish to watch the film. I know I will.
Verdict: Candy-Floss stories always appeal to Romantics. Catch it at a theatre near you.
