Love Triangles Gone Wrong In The Movies

The entertainment industry has been relying on love triangles to add drama and intrigue to otherwise vapid plots for years on end. There is something piquant about a good love triangle. The innate suspense that comes with not knowing who gets the guy/girl in the end, and the empathy or anger one might feel towards the unrequited lover are the crutches that a good love triangle stands on.

Bollywood has been rife with triangles that have been box-office hits, lapped up rapaciously by the viewers. Some love triangles however, just end up disappointing us and make our hearts go out for the person who got railroaded in the process, a petty distraction, or just an oblivious vehicle that united the two lovers.

Here are some love triangles that we thought had unfair endings.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Ignore the fact that Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) chose Tina (Rani Mukerji) over Anjali (Kajol), but one cannot overlook the fact that he did not bother to contact his ”best friend” for eight whole years after she left college. What’s more, Aman (Salman Khan) loved Anjali unconditionally, and accepted her the way she was, while Rahul poked fun at her for dolling up, friend-zoned her, and turned a blind eye to her very obviously broken heart. Wasn’t it just utterly heart-wrenching to watch Aman take the high road and walk away after he helped Rahul and Anjali reunite?

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

A classic case of the confused dame, who loves to play the damsel in distress. Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) claims to be in love Sameer (Salman Khan). So deep is her love that she confides in her husband Vanraj (Ajay Devgn), who, being a nice guy, decides to head all the way to Italy with her just so she can be reunited with her one true love. Upon meeting Sameer, however, Nandini decides she must go back to Vanraj. What the deuce just happened?! Not only did she make a complete fool of poor Sameer, who waited for her patiently, she also toyed with Vanraj’s feelings. Not cool, Nandini, not cool!

Dil Se

Not exactly a love triangle, Dil Se, is a poignant story of Aman Varma’s (SRK) undying (and arguably foolish) love for Meghna (Manisha Koirala), who is a part of an insurgent outfit that has planned multiple suicide bombings. Aman gets wary of Meghna, when her true identity is revealed, and gets engaged to Preeti Nair (Priety Zinta). Now, Preeti falls in love with Aman, and Aman decides to go ahead and get married to her, while still secretly harboring feelings for Meghna. The film ends with an explosion of a bomb on Meghna’s person, killing both her, and Aman. You can’t help but cry for Preeti and Aman, and what could have been.

Cocktail

Just when Deepika Padukone‘s Veronica (who clearly secretly craves emotional intimacy) starts developing real feelings for Gautam (Saif Ali Khan), Meera (Diana Penty) decides to fall in love with him, conveniently forgetting that it was Veronica who put a roof over her head when she was unceremoniously abandoned by her husband. Gautam chooses Meera, as she is the more ”traditional” one as opposed to the independent, headstrong Veronica. To add insult to injury, Meera also pretends to be the self-sacrificing angel of kindness, painting good old Veronica as the bad guy, eventually ‘guilt’ing her into letting wishy-washy Gautam go. In what world is that fair?

Student of The Year

Shanaya (Alia Bhatt) and Rohan (Varun Dhawan) are a couple of teenagers madly in love. Enter Abhimanyu (Siddharth Malhotra), who befriends Rohan and gets in the good books of his parents. He also scores brownie points with Shanaya, who wants Rohan to be more attentive and invested in their relationship, by helping her make Rohan jealous. Abhimanyu basically makes Rohan realize his love for Shanaya and then steals the girl from under his nose. Poor Rohan! That was no ordinary burn.

Here’s to the Lonely Hearts Club! It sucks but ….
