With Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire, electronic music trio Major Lazer is all set to tour India with its Mad Decent Block Party. Organized by Sunburn and Oji, the party will be at Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru on February 19th, 20th and 21st respectively. The party will also see heavyweights such as Gorgon City, Big Gigantic (Live), Giraffage, Nucleya (only in Delhi), Naezy and Divine among others – spinning the best of trap, dubstep, reggae, moombahton, dancehall and more. Major Lazer really knows how to party, read on to know a few fun facts about them:

What exactly is Mad Decent?

Founded and managed by Diplo, Mad Decent is a Philadelphia-based record label, which has a 100+ strong artist roster including Alvaro, Baauer, Crookers, Dillon Francis, Snake, Zeds Dead, Rusko and many more. The label has been organizing the hugely popular Mad Decent Block Party since 2008, touring throughout the United States. This festival of the traveling party began at a much smaller scale, with simply a rented tent, dunk tank and BBQ on a Philadelphia street.

A rage called Lean On

There’s a reason the trio is best known for Lean On, a track that is heard at least 12 times on an average night out. An instant hit, it has peaked numerous charts around the world. Last year, Spotify declared Lean On as the most streamed song of all time, with currently over 600 million streams. With 1.1 billion views on YouTube, the accompanying music video was filmed in Karjat and Vasai, as well as in Bangalore and Stockholm City. Before Mo provided vocals for the track, the track was offered to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, who rejected it. Diplo called this turn of events a blessing in disguise, as he feels that Mo sounds better than anybody was going to sound on that record. And don’t we agree!

Of their albums…

With the fourth studio album on the way, Major Lazer has already released three studio albums, three mix albums, three extended plays, five mixtapes and fourteen singles. The studio albums themselves feature names like Bruno Mars, Ellie Goulding, Ariana Grande, Shaggy, Laidback Luke, 2 Chainz, Wyclef Jean, GTA and Tyga among many others. The trio has produced Reincarnated, the debut reggae album by Snoop Dogg and also partly produced Rita Ora’s debut album, Ora.

"Look ma, I’m on TV…"

Based on Major Lazer, an American animated television series of the same name was created by Diplo, Ferry Gouw and Kevin Kusatsu. It has been running on FXX since April 16, 2015 as part of the channel’s Animation Domination High-Def (ADHD) block. Set in the future, Major Lazer is a Jamaican superhero with a laser gun for a right hand who fights against the dystopian forces led by Jamaica’s leader President Whitewall and his servant General Rubbish. Major Lazer is assisted in his fight by President Whitewall’s daughter Penny Whitewall and hacker Blkmrkt.

Diplo & His Many Hats

Based in Los Angeles, Thomas Wesley Pentz aka Diplo is an American DJ, producer, rapper, songwriter, etc. His artist name is short for Diplodocus, which derives from his childhood fascination with dinosaurs. Apart from managing Mad Decent, he has also co-founded the non-profit organization Heaps Decent. Diplo has worked as a school teacher in Philadelphia, amongst other jobs he had.

Being an independent producer who has worked with MIA, Britney Spears, Madonna, Shakira, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Usher, Snoop Dogg and Chris Brown, Diplo has collaborated with Skrillex to create the duo Jack U. The lead member of Major Lazer has dated MIA, Katy Perry and also has two children with Kathryn Lockhart. Quite the football/soccer fan, Diplo had created a mix for the 2014 FIFA World Cup 2014 and also purchased a minority share of Arizona United SC of the United Soccer League earlier this year. As an artist, Diplo, along with his collaborations Major Lazer and Jack U, has had the most number of Shazam searches in 2015.

Make sure you catch them while they are in India. Miss and regret!
