Mad Max: Fury Road: Film Review – Viciously Stunning, Mad Max is right in the face!

George Miller has returned to the franchise which spawned an entire generation of post-apocalyptic films after making animated features over the years (Happy Feet, Happy Feet 2). He is spot-on (literally with the timings of the bombs)  in almost every department. 30 years after the last Mad Max film, Fury Road is not related to any of the previous Mel Gibson films. The plot is new, with many leitmotifs in between.

FURY ROAD

Tom Hardy plays Max Rockatansky, a man haunted by memories of his family who is constantly on the run post the apocalypse. Max is running away from the War Lords, who are lead by a dictator like figure, Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). The world is fighting for oil in the movie, which is not common in today’s complex world. Immortan Joe has water and food at his expense, much to the dismay of the poor people , standing below his mountain base. Max is captured and is used as a Blood Bag for the gullible young War Lord Nux.

Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) is  a rebel, trying to help Immortan’s wives to freedom and away from the system. She then meets Max along the way, with the young Nux joining in later. Miller, who began production for the film four years ago, has put in subtle references of dystopia in the film, notably with the music. The sets are magnificent, with exquisite décor for car detailing. Action sequences are of a new type,  with the pole vaults deserving a special mention.

Tom Hardy as Max is a great combination of acting prowess and action sequences, though he never reaches the heights of Locke (2013), where he was the only member of the cast. The movie truly belongs to Charlize Theron, for the devastation she leaves behind after she takes the wives. Theoron actually gains precedence over Max during the film, with an introduction to her early life and family. The film though may be seen as one continuous chase in its 120 minutes run-time, it is oddly satisfying. The strong sense of matriarchy , seen when the wives retaliate against against Joe and his War Boys, the wily CGI and distant affiliation for its characters is what makes this a Mad ride.

Why You Should Watch This Film

Mad Max: Fury Road  stands out due to its action sequences and camera work, never going over the top. It’s the one that will slip past post Avengers.
