"Main dikhta hu cute, innocent, swami type ka, but hu bade haraami type ka", says Shreenath Prasad aka Seenu. Main Tera Hero is about this cute, innocent looking kid who is indeed a haraami at core. A sweet and simple story. Seenu (Varun Dhawan), the notorious kid living in Ooty decides to leave for Bangalore for his higher education. Cupid strikes him and he falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D Cruz). It’s love at first sight. The entire affair goes topsy-turvy, when he realizes the love of his life is betrothed to Angad Negi (Arunoday Singh). After few peppy dance number, Sunaina reciprocates but here comes the twist. Sunaina gets kidnapped. But Angad is not involved. Then who? Enter Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri), the daughter of an infamous gangster played by Anupam Kher. She too is in love with Seenu. It’s upto Seenu to choose which damsel to be with – Sunaina or Ayesha?
Main Tera Hero is a David Dhawan movie in every sense. A simple storyline enhanced with quirky dialogues, dinchak dance numbers and dumdaar action. And romance forms the crux of the plot. It is not limited to a love line or love triangle. But a whole love quadrangle is involved. Despite the plot is as thin as paper, papa Dhawan doesn’t fail to deliver a laugh riot.
Scriptwriter Tushar Hiranandani has weaved a story that enables the audience to leave their brains at home. Yet enjoy a typical Bollywood commercial cinema. Even with the inclusion of several tried and tested comic elements, the movie doesn’t fall flat. Surprisingly, the high humor quotient works rather well, tickling the funny bone of the viewer. Taking the story plot to a new level are the quirky one-liners and hilarious dialogues.
Be it Seenu’s abrupt conversations with Gods. Or the Bolenath bhajan (terrific parody of the song, "Badameez Dil" from YJHD). Or idiosyncratic references to several other movies and actors, each of them were unique and individual hits.
The plot had its share of hitches. For e.g. it was quite sluggish compared to what the trailer offered. But director Dhawan smartly covered up all the weaknesses in the plot with pulsating music and Varun’s perfect comedy timing.
Varun Dhawan is the perfect combination of Govinda‘s masti, Salman‘s style and Akshay‘s stunt, topped with the correct amount of boyish charm. Bet, you can’t take your eyes off him! Newbie Varun is a sensational superstar in making. David Dhawan‘s actresses from the 90s, always created a sensation onscreen. But unfortunately with both Ileana D Cruz and Nargis Fakhri the same doesn’t hold true. Ileana’s chemistry with Varun didn’t feel for real while Nargis’s character was futile. Supporting cast Arunoday Singh, Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla and others delivered a fine performance.
Over the decades David Dhawan has offered some fantastic, timeless comedy flicks that are entertaining and winsome. If his last stint, Chashme Baddoor was gratifying, Main Tera Hero is fabulous. The concise edits, precise comic timing and grooving music makes it the perfect weekend watch with family and friends.
Why should you watch this film?
If you are a fan of the David Dhawan-Govinda era of the 1990s, here’s your ideal chance to relive it. Papa Dhawan along with beta Dhawan has offered a brilliant comedy flick. Every element of the movie makes one feel that Main Tera Hero is the contemporary avatar of a 90s Dhawan film. And Varun is Govinda’s cinematic rebirth onscreen, assiduously delightful to the core. Rescuing us from the mundane of our lives, this movie offers 128 minutes of mere guffaw, jocular and craziness.
