The primary goal of the film festival is to showcase the latest cutting-edge independent cinema and art house films. Films are screened even before they release in theatres. Last year, A Death in the Gunj was chosen as the opening film, almost seven months before it hit theatres. Even Lipstick under My Burkha was showcased for MAMI attendees before it got embroiled in controversy.
MAMI is a popular event, attended even by the biggest Bollywood stars. Many grace the Red Carpet for the opening and closing events, or are seen at the Movie Mela, which is a popular feature of MAMI. There are meetups where you can meet the cast of a popular movie, or you can simply catch a glimpse of them at film screenings.
Interviews with Stars
The Movie Mela includes interviews with celebrities, the cast and crew of a film, or simply a chat with other celebrated members of the film society. It is always fun to attend these events as you get a chance to speak with your favorite celebs, ask them questions about their movies, and interact with them like never before.
Exposure to World Cinema
MAMI screens various genres of movies, from Bollywood, Hollywood and also cult international films. Over 200 movies are screened over the course of seven days, in cinemas all over the city, so you don’t have to bother traveling all the way to 'town' to catch a movie. This year, seven venues have been chosen to showcase films for the festival.
At the end, there is also an award function, which celebrates the best in world cinema. These functions are attended by the A-listers of Bollywood, who also hand out awards to the winners. This is also the place where you can catch a glimpse of Aamir Khan, who does not usually attend award functions. But MAMI, like we said before, is a celeb favorite!
