Man On A Ledge: Movie Review

[Rating: 2.5]

Director: Asger Leth

Cast: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris

Synopsis: An ex-cop and now wanted fugitive (Sam Worthington) stands on the ledge of a high-rise building while a hard-living New York Police Department negotiator (Elizabeth Banks) tries to talk him down. The longer they are on the ledge, the more she realizes that he might have an ulterior objective.

Review: There’s nothing wrong with this movie per say, it seems like an honest attempt to thrill. But it hasn’t been done right. So many loopholes that make you wonder, has it been designed to insult the audiences intelligence? It manages to create enough suspense despite the predictability, yes, but there it a lot missing. There is a lot brrowed from other movies. There is a lot one has already seen before. There isn’t anything new. But one doesn’t come out of the theatre totally unsatisfied either.

Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) checks in at the Roosevelt Hotel and climbs on the ledge, apparently ready to commit suicide. The police discover that Nick is an ex-policeman who has been framed for stealing millions of dollars worth of diamonds. Nick had escaped a week before after being allowed to attend his father’s funeral. The alternate plot here, however, is that Nick is merely distracting the police while his brother Joey (Jamie Bell) and Joey’s girlfriend Angie (Genesis Rodriguez) break into the upper floor of the building he’s threatening to jump from, to steal the diamond and prove Nick’s innocence.

Gave too much away? Don’t think so, because you would have probably guessed it already. The suspense is great, but built wrongly. 2 plots going on simultaneously, sometimes the audience feels stupid. Loopholes are too many. Still makes for a good saturday evening watch. But only if nothing better is playing. It’s almost always predictable. Yet, the suspense and thrill is there, like you are trying to defuse a bomb and you know it won’t explode. But you’re still scared you will cut the wrong wires.

Verdict: Watch it if you like suspense thrillers and don’t mind a few loopholes here and there. Watch it if you must watch something this weekend.
