Fiesty, Bold, Mardaani… Shivani Shivaji Roy urf Rani Mukerji
Come August 22, the cinemas will navigate your interest to a cutting edge thriller with clouts and kicks to the masterminds and game planners from the world of child sex trafficking. Screens are about to turn red as Mumbai meets the new face of vengeance. Vengeance strikes this time to unshackle India’s financial capital’s underbelly where child abduction and exploitation is on a rise. Force this time departs from six packs, force derails from bearded macho-ism, force clubs with feminism to find a new name… Mardaani.
Claiming territory for the role played by her in No One Killed Jessica, Rani Mukerji returns with equal fierceness in appearance, and an even more definitive purpose in Pradeep Sarkar’s Mardaani. Produced by Yash Raj Films, this raw and edgy yet slick thriller will be Rani Mukerji’s one (wo)man show. Previously, the director-actress duo have worked on Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag (2007), also produced under the YRF banner.
The trailer that was unveiled on June 24, 2014 promises yet another unmistakable move by Rani Mukerji in her choice of films. Mardaani, that refers to the ineluctable persona of Shivani Shivaji Roy is the story of rebellion against the cruel underbelly of Mumbai. The conflict becomes personal when the mafia ravishes a teenage girl closely related to Roy. It, then becomes a chase to fight the ugly that looms large in the city lights of Mumbai.
Taking a sabbatical from his style of filmmaking is Bengali director Pradeep Sarkar whose work has garnered both commercial success and critical acclaim. Mardaani also stars Bengali actor Jisshu Sengupta as Shivani’s love interest. Shantanu Moitra teams up with the gifted director once again to render some beautiful soundtracks. With the playground set, and the rules dictated, it is time for a countdown to the release of Mardaani and Rani Mukerji’s awe-inspiring daredevil avatar.
