Marvel Phase 2: Hits and Misses

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed the face of comic book film adaptations. While many others still struggle, Marvel seems to have nailed the formula for creating new films and sustaining their strong box office presence. With each Marvel film making an obscene amount of money, year on year, there’s always feverish excitement around their releases. However, there are times when Marvel films don’t turn out to be blockbusters. And so, here are Marvel’s Phase 2 Hits and Misses, and an analysis of the films which were hot, and those which were not!

Guardians of the Galaxy – HIT
This film took everyone by surprise. With an eclectic mix of characters, which included a talking raccoon and a humanoid tree, Guardians of the Galaxy amazed us with the fact that it was set entirely in outer space. Add to that the hilarious jokes that are classic Marvel goodness, and Chris Pratt as Star Lord, and you’ve got a recipe for a brilliant film!

While Avengers: Age of Ultron did make almost a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, it lacked everything the first film had. Those brilliant quips from the characters that were present in the first film were, much to our disappointment, missing, and Age of Ultron just didn’t have the same feel to it as its predecessor.

Ant-Man – HIT
Who knew a tiny hero could be so successful? Turns out, Ant-Man made waves all over the world, for its engaging script and for staying grounded. Another contributing factor was that it was a standalone film (sort of), and didn’t need to adhere to events and timelines from other films. We like!

Iron Man 3 – MISS
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man is single-handedly responsible for the success of Marvel Studios, because he gave them the first hit Iron Man film. However, Iron Man 3 wasn’t what we wanted. Add to that, the complete wastage of Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin. We know, disappointing!

Captain America: The First Avenger was pretty ho-hum. But Captain America: The Winter Soldier was thrilling and exciting, and gave you bang for your buck. Chris Evans shone as the star spangled soldier, battling his long-lost brother. All in all, a great film you really should watch!

Thor: The Dark World – MISS
What can we say about Thor: The Dark World? Apart from Loki’s small appearance, the film wasn’t really that great. With a slightly shoddy plot and a banal Chris Hemsworth, who served only as eye candy for the ladies and some men, there really wasn’t much in the film.

It looks like Marvel had a balanced Phase 2 – 3 hits and 3 misses. Here’s hoping that they turn their game around, and make sure all the films of Phase 3 are on point!
