Me Before You: Film Review – Tries Hard To Move You

Verdict: This love story won’t warm your heart.

Romantic dramas generally tend to be sappy and aim at getting you all teary-eyed. The Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin-starrer, Me Before You, isn’t one of them. However, the movie is so predictable that it fails to get any emotional reaction from you. Ed Sheeran’s Grammy Award-winning chartbuster, Thinking Out Loud, and his other hit, Photograph, are nicely used in the narrative, and may just be the best part of this film.

Wheelchair-bound, Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), wants to end his life with dignity rather than being a burden on his family. His parents (Janet McTeer and Charles Dance) plan on getting someone to cheer him up and make him change his decision. Louisa ‘Lou’ Clarke (Emilia Clarke) seems like the perfect candidate as the girl has little ambition and is in desperate need of a job. The initial meetings between Lou and Will are not so pleasant but slowly the two of them form a special bond that changes their lives forever. Me Before You

Me Before You is based on Jojo Moyes’ novel of the same name but looks like the writers of the film skimmed through the book as the movie only focuses on the lead pair. The other characters like Will’s parents, Lou’s sister, and boyfriend are merely there to fill the runtime. The plot is typical and there are no twists or surprises that are thrown in. The writers also don’t give much time for the story to build up, making the connection between Lou and Will seem less believable.

Emilia Clarke, who is best known for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO series, Game of Thrones (GoT), is a huge disappointment. The actress tries hard to come off as a happy-go-lucky girl but is annoying for most parts of the film. Her GoT co-star, Charles Dance, who plays Will’s father is wasted in a role that gives him just about four scenes. Sam Claflin, on the other hand, is superb and makes you feel his pain. This performance should definitely help him bag some more films. Janet McTeer, too, does full justice to her character.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Emilia Clarke‘s popularity will ensure that a lot of people will watch Me Before You. If you love her in Game of Thrones, give this latest movie a miss. Me Before You is strictly for fans of romantic films.
