Meet the Showstoppers: B-towners hit LFW

Just when we had started to recover from the awards season, fashion weeks mark their arrival. And what are fashion weeks all about? Clothes, that’s right. Artistry, yes. Parties, of course. And celebrities. Lots and lots of Bollywood celebrities. Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 is on in full swing, and while the debate on whether the fashion week’s priorities are skewed or not is never-ending, we take a look at some celebrity spotting straight from the runway this season.

LFW kickstarted on a high note with Manish Malhotra’s ultra-feminine Summer Affair collection. While his designs looked a tad-bit derivative and inspired *cough Sabyasachi* *cough Dolce & Gabbana*, we couldn’t take our eyes off Sonakshi Sinha—the new darling on the fashion block—who opened the show for MM in a splendid midnight blue creation.

Jacqueline Fernandez was her usual peppy self as she played the blushing bride for designer Tarun Tahiliani in a pink and orange floor-length anarkali paired with a netted dupatta. The jewelry overdrive was courtesy Reliance Jewels, which presented Tahiliani’s collection and was meant to showcase a tasteful blend of couture & jewelry.

Richa Chadda set the ramp ablaze for fashion designer Sounia Gohil. Gohil’s collection featured a palette of pastel hues, sheer fabric and fresh prints. But considering Gohil decided to put everything into one for her showstopper’s dress, it sent us one too many mixed signals!
And here’s Neha Dhupia walking the ramp for Payal Singhal’s collection ‘The Lady Sahara’. Nothing too show-stopping about that ensemble. Wish there were nicer things to say about that design, but we guess we’ll just end it at that. However, look up-close and tell us who wouldn’t want to make love to that hair and make-up!

Moving on, Dorothy Perkins just set up shop in India. And walking for the British brand was Kangana Ranaut, shining as she strutted down the ramp, quite literally. The outfit is screaming for a more modern silhouette… something, anything to break up all the fabric! We just can’t find a silver lining in this metallic garb. Sad that they got Kangana Ranaut to walk for them and this is the best they could do! And who would’ve thought we’d live to see the day when they’d make entire gowns (with boat neck and short sleeves and what not) from silver wrapping paper.

Good news is, there’s still a lot more to come. And all eyes are set on Kareena Kapoor Khan, LFW’s resident finale diva. With a lot of dramatic looks in the past, we wonder what’s coming up this year when she walks for Rajesh Pratap Singh. Keep watching this space for all deets (details) on Lakme Fashion Week, where, for inexplicable reasons, Fashion meets Bollywood.
