When two talented and legendary actors come together on stage, you expect nothing but the best. And Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta ensured that those expectations were met with their mind-blowing performances. Running successfully since the last two years, Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha is an emotional roller coaster ride about love and life. The play revolves around the story about long-lost lovers, Pritam (Anupam Kher) and Hema (Neena Gupta) who meet after several years and walk down memory lane, talking about why they drifted apart.
Neena Gupta is back on stage after a long break of nine years and that is one of the major reasons why you should watch this play. She plays the role of a strong, independent lady albeit with a soft heart. She does so beautifully, to say the least. Written and directed by Rakesh Bedi, the Hindi play is a great balance of comedy and tragedy – filled with bitter and sweet memories of the couple. Bedi was also seen doing a small yet important cameo of a curious jogger. The play begins with the couple meeting in Delhi’s Lodhi Garden after 35 long years to discover the truth behind their separation. Although they were childhood sweethearts, circumstances did not allow them to marry each other. While talking about their lives, they happen to exchange several happy as well as sad moments of their lives which reveal what led them to be who they are today.
Rakesh Bedi and Satish Kaushik bring in the much-needed comic relief to the story. Kher and Gupta very effortlessly take you through the nostalgic moments of the lives of their characters. There were moments in the story where you want to go home and give your parents a tight hug and tell them how much you love them. The stellar performances make you feel like you are a part of the entire story and keep you hooked throughout. What we loved was that this love story isn’t about two young people romancing around trees. This one is about a couple reminiscing their good as well as bad days. It makes you want to believe in the purity of love. So watch this space for the upcoming details of the play and make sure you book the tickets in advance because it’s usually always sold out.
