Gripping but Shockingly Voyeuristic
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
Cast & Crew: Mahie Gill, Deepak Dobriyal, Ajay Gehi.
Plot Summary: Not A Love Story is inspired by the 2008 murder case (well known as the Neeraj Grover murder case), wherein a man was murdered and his body was chopped into pieces in suburban Mumbai.
Review: We all know the case files. It was all over the newspapers. The Neeraj Grover murder case shocked the nation 3 years ago. Ram Gopal Verma’s interpretation will only infuse that information with bloody and voyeuristic images. The stories in the papers were appalling enough but RGV manages to create absolute shock value with his version. Despite the gruesome nature of the crime, this crime of passion is more about the passion than about the crime.
Crimes of passion generally make compelling stories but when the camera goes uncomfortably inside the lead actress’ blouse and under her skirt, you find it difficult to understand what the director’s trying to say. The blatant voyeurism definitely puts you off, especially if you’re a woman. It doesn’t exactly add any creative value to the shot, right? But it’s there and it’s in your face!
“Not A Love Story”, apart from shock value has certain other things going for it. The impact established by using contradictory pieces of music with gruesome scenes, specially the Rangeela track and also a powerful performance by Mahie Gill. But all in all, it’s still worth a watch for RGV fan’s because no one plays with blood and gore better than him (in India of course).
