The Mummy, directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by David Koepp, releases in India this Friday on 9th June, starting the Dark Universe series that will include remakes of classic horror movies like Bride of Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Dracula, and more. But it's not the first time that Egypt has captured the attention of Hollywood filmmakers. Whether it's wonders of ancient Egypt or its religious influence, it's been an inspiration for many successful movies. While you wait to see Tom Cruise battle supernatural ancient Egyptian forces in one of the biggest June blockbusters, here are five movies like The Mummy you can watch:
A large credit for the popularity of mummies as monsters has to do with the original The Mummy trilogy which started in 1999. Brendan Fraser plays an adventurer who goes to the city of the dead with an archaeologist and her brother where they accidentally awaken a cursed Imhotep.
Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones is another adventurer you can seek out. Starring Harrison Ford, Raiders of the Lost Ark is the movie that gave rise to a masterful series. Created by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg, if you're looking for some adventure in Egypt beyond The Mummy, Indian Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark is the way to go.
This might be an animated feature film and not have much to do with The Mummy beyond the country, it's worth the watch for all ages. It's made by Dreamworks, the same company that went on to give us Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. It follows the life of Moses, also known as the Prince of Egypt.
Movies featuring the mummy don't always have to be all serious. This one is a highly-rated comedy featuring Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy who are alive and well in a nursing home and have to fight for the souls of fellow residents against an ancient Egyptian mummy.
The final installment of Night at the Museum is also another comedy you can watch before The Mummy. While it's not set in Egypt, it very much has the spirit of the sandy desert. It has great performances by many acclaimed actors – Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Rami Malek, and Ricky Gervais, to name a few.
