Bollywood movies normally took a lot of time to produce and shoot but recently, the films are getting churned out faster. Recent movies like October and Ittefaq were shot within a month or so. However, films like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat took a year or so to be shot but delivered something magical and magnificent at the box office.
In the past decades, some Bollywood movies took way too long to be produced, shot and released.
1. Pakeezah (1972)
The film starring Meena Kumari and Raaj Kumar was a movie about a courtesan who falls in love with a forest ranger and elopes only to be brought back to the brothel. The first shot for ‘Pakeezah’ was taken in 1957 but due to many reasons, the film was released after 15 years in 1972.
The delay for more than a decade caused the project to change from black and white to color. The film was re-shot in with a borrowed lens from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios on a royalty basis that also increased the cost of the film.
2. Aatank Hi Aatank (1995)
Believe it or not, Aamir Khan starred in Bollywood’s version of ‘The Godfather’. Not only that, he had replaced Sunny Deol in the movie. ‘Aatank Hi Aatank starred Juhi Chawla and Rajinikanth. It took 3 years to release, scenes were either removed from the film or re-shot.
Also, Aamir Khan thinks of this movie as a mistake, this is what he said:
“After the release of this film I was shocked. I felt like I shouldn’t have done the film. No sooner did I watch the film I felt, did I realize that I have really done a very bad job. I chose some not-so-good roles at the beginning of my career.”
3. Zamaanat: And Justice For All (2014)
This Arshad Warsi- Karishma Kapoor- Amitabh Bachchan starrer was written in 1986 but got shelved. The film was then reworked in 1996 and took 6 years to complete. The director S. Ramanathan passed away in 2013 and ‘Zamannat’ was released in 2014. It took around 18 years for it to hit the theatres.
Amitabh Bachchan played a blind lawyer who is approached by Karishma Kapoor (a college girl) who wants him to defend Arshad Warsi (her boyfriend).
4. Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke (2004)
Shah Rukh Khan and Raveena Tandon were paired together in a forgettable movie. A romantic movie that saw the lead (SRK) become a successful singer and how it took a toll on his relationships.
If rumors are to be believed, the actors left the movie incomplete in 1994 and didn’t even dub for their parts. It was then revived with new actors and released 10 years later in 2004.
5. Mehbooba (2008)
This movie revolved around a man in Budapest, who dreams about a girl for 8 years, the girl turns out to be his lawyer’s foster daughter and proposes to her. That’s not all, the girl has another identity in New York and is about to get married to his brother.
Coincidently, the movie also took 8 years to release. The movie starred Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, and Manisha Koirala who completed the film in 2000.
6. Sanam Teri Kasam (2009)
A movie that revolved around a woman getting married to her lover’s friend instead of her lover. The movie was completed in 1994 but was released in 2009. In the 15 years, it went through legal cases and name changes only to be forgotten.
It starred Pooja Bhatt, Saif Ali Khan, and Atul Agnihotri.
7. Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s extraordinary piece of art took 12 years to get conceptualized and shot. In 1999, when Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam released he wanted to make it with Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai. After Devdas (2002), he wanted to cast Aishwarya and Shah Rukh Khan. Later when he was shooting for Black (2005), he thought of casting Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor as Bajirao and Mastani. Rani Mukherji was supposed to play Kashibai. But then Salman-Kareena were seen together in Kyon Ki (2005). In 2013, came along Ranveer-Deepika- Bhansali and his magnum opus came to life.
In fact, there is a poster of Salman and Aishwarya as Bajirao and Mastani in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s office.
8. Deewana Main Deewana (2013)
A movie with characters called Basant and Vasant that starred Govinda and Priyanka Chopra was shot in 2003. The movie saw a 20-year-old Priyanka Chopra dancing to a song called ‘Kala Doriya’.
And this movie released after 10 years which means the makers obviously wanted to cash in on her success but failed, miserably.
9. Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam (2002)
Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan were seen together in ‘Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam’. The movie faced a lot of hassles in production and it took a good amount of 6 years. The story revolved around a husband’s jealousy from his wife’s childhood friend.
To make things worse, the movie released on the same day as Spiderman. It didn’t really earn.
10. Jagga Jasoos (2017)
Jagga Jasoos was a musical with a lot of resemblance to Tintin. The movie was in the making for 5 years. In the span of those five years, all that happened were breaks and breakups. The stars Ranbir and Katrina had to fit into the same clothes for 5 years, imagine!
Hence proved, time is money.
